The pictures in this book are done in a soft tone of realism, and because some of the objects are not highlighted in black they kind of blend in and do not stand out, but blend into the background. The color palate is pretty dull representing winter until after the climax of the book when it turns spring. She does create some rough textures with the nature scenes to emphasis the bark on trees and also the softness of the fox's coat. The pictures are all framed, but the illustrator does add random branches of trees on the text side of the page.
