Da vsem mnenjem, objavljenim na avtoričini spletni strani, dodam še prijateljičinega: "Ta knjiga me je naučila bruhati."

Na to delo lahko gledamo tudi kot na skoraj 190 strani dolg pojav "the blind leading the blind". Že na platnici je napaka - glede na (sodobne) psihiatrične klasifikacije po opisih v knjigi sodeč avtorica namreč ni imela bulimije, temveč purgativno anoreksijo. Najhuje pa je, da je to delo priročnik 'za' motnje hranjenja, ne pa za njihovo premagovanje.

Avtorica skozi svojo osebno pripoved opisuje, kako se ji določena živila gnusijo in s tem pri svojih bralcih (ki so po večini posamezniki z motnjami hranjenja) le še okrepi občutek odpora do hrane. Takšni zapisi se mi zdijo za knjigo, ki se promovira kot orodje za premagovanje težav s hrano, izredno neprimerni.

V knjigi je večkrat omenjeno, koliko kilogramov ima Anja in s kakšno hitrostjo jih izgublja. Pri posameznikih z motnjami hranjenja takšni zapisi pogosto vodijo v poslabšanje, ne pa izboljšanje stanja, kakor ga obljublja pisateljica. Pojavijo se lahko namreč misli, kot so "Oh, jaz imam še več kil, torej sem pa res debel_a in moram še bolj shujšati," ali pa "Hmm, jaz hujšam dosti počasneje, nisem dovolj boln_a, da bi poiskal_a pomoč." Ena od značilnosti motenj hranjenja je namreč tekmovalnost bolezni in ne bi me presenetilo, če bi kateri od bralcev pričel 'tekmovati' z Anjo iz zgodbe - da bo hitreje izgubil več kilogramov.

V besedilu so prav tako zajeti nazorni opisi tega, kako se pripraviti do bruhanja, kako se samopoškodovati in kako manipulirati z drugimi, da ne bi odkrili obstoječih težav. Ponovno se je treba vprašati, kako se bo na te vsebine odzvala oseba, ki se sooča z motnjo hranjenja. Nekateri se bodo morda res zamislili nad svojim početjem, mnogi pa bodo našli nove ideje in načine za vzdrževanje in okrepitev svoje motnje.

Cel tretji del knjige bi po mojem mnenju bilo treba izključiti, saj vsebuje preveč plehko in slabo obrazložene psihološke koncepte, ki jih še avtorica sama ne razume. Prav tako pa vsebuje več strani 'veganske propagande'. Če si je Anja vzela pravico podrobno deliti svoje mnenje (ki je podano zelo enostransko), ga bom pa še jaz: Za moje pojme vegetarijanstvo oz. celo veganstvo pri osebah z zgodovino motnjo hranjenja nista motivirana z etičnimi razlogi ali željo po 'bolj zdravem načinu prehranjevanja' (saj to objektivno ter znanstveno gledano niti nista), temveč sta le bolj prikrita načina ohranjanja arbitrarnih prehranskih pravil in vzdrževanja vsaj nekaj elementov motenega prehranjevanja. V knjigo, ki naj bi izboljšala bralčev odnos s hrano, nikakor ne sodi več strani dolg zapis o tem, kako je ogromen del živil 'slab' in 'škodljiv'!

Nikakor ne nameravam diskreditirati Anjine zgodbe in del mene celo verjame, da je knjiga bila napisana dobronamerno, toda roko na srce: ženska ni podkovana na psihološkem področju. Njena knjiga niti približno ne more biti priročnik, niti magičen pripomoček za obravnavo motenj hranjenja, kot ga promovira na svoji spletni strani. Glede na to, da so motnje hranjenja med najnevarnejšimi in najsmrtonosnejšimi duševnimi motnjami, se mi tak stil marketinga ne zdi le neodgovoren, temveč naravnost nevaren.

⚠️ Sploh v zadnjem delu, kjer so deljene tudi zgodbe drugih posameznikov, tiči še kako grozen zapis, ki lahko pri posebej ranljivih posameznikih vodi v samomorilno vedenje! ⚠️

Motnje hranjenja so resna tema in vsak ima pravico deliti svojo izkušnjo, vendar naj obravnava in zdravljenje duševnih težav ostajata v domeni specialistov: psihoterapevtov, psihologov in psihiatrov. Seveda je knjiga lahko čisto 'navadno' branje za ljudi, ki jo preberejo iz radovednosti, kaj se dogaja v glavah tistih z motnjami hranjenja. Ker pa je namenjena čisto drugi populaciji, se je treba zavedati, da ljudi z motnjo hranjenja k branju tovrstnih del pogosto motivirajo drugi motivi ter da se ne bodo odzvali enako, kot splošna populacija. Temu bi bilo treba prilagoditi sploh vsebino dela, ki je izredno preveč eksplicitna in je lahko močan sprožilec za razvoj, ponovitev ali poglobitev duševnih težav pri tistih z že obstoječimi predispozicijami.

To echo the opinions shared on the author’s website, I’ll add a friend’s comment: “This book taught me how to throw up.”

One could also describe this work—almost 190 pages long—as “the blind leading the blind.” Even the cover is misleading – according to modern psychiatric classifications and the descriptions in the book, it seems the author never had bulimia but rather purging anorexia. The worst part is that the book reads like a manual not for overcoming an eating disorder, but for maintaining one.

The author, through a personal narrative, describes how certain foods disgusted her and sharing this disgust with her readers (who are to be expected to gave eating disorders) shouldn't belong in a self-promoting 'self-help' book. Such entries seem less like a depiction of recovery and more like the promotion of restrictive behaviors around food.

The book repeatedly mentions how much Anja weighed and how quickly she lost weight, giving precise numbers and descriptions of methods to suppress hunger. This could lead some vulnerable readers to compare themselves with her and think: “She was lighter than me, so I need to lose even more weight,” or “Hmm, I’m not sick enough or thin enough to seek help.” One of the characteristics of eating disorders is their competitive nature, so it’s not surprising that some readers might begin to “compete” with Anja’s story—to lose weight even faster.

There are also graphic descriptions of how to prepare to purge, how to self-harm, and how to manipulate others without revealing existing mental health issues. Again, we must ask whether this content is coming from someone who is truly in recovery. For some, this might be a wake-up call; for others, unfortunately, it could serve as an instruction manual and fuel for their disorder.

In my opinion, the entire third part of the book should have been left out. It contains overly simplistic and poorly explained psychological concepts that the author herself clearly doesn’t fully understand. It also includes several pages of what can only be described as vegan propaganda. Since Anja took the liberty of openly sharing her (very one-sided) opinion, I’ll share mine too: In my view, vegetarianism—and especially veganism—in people with a history of eating disorders is rarely driven by ethical concerns or a desire for a “healthier lifestyle” (which, objectively and scientifically speaking, these diets are not). Instead, they often serve as more socially acceptable ways to maintain restrictive eating patterns and to preserve at least some aspects of disordered behavior. A book that’s supposedly meant to help readers improve their relationship with food has no business including long passages about how a large portion of foods are “bad” or “harmful.”

I am by no means trying to discredit Anja’s story, and I truly believe she wrote this book with the best intentions. However, I must speak from the heart: the book is not educational or psychologically therapeutic. It’s not a manual, nor a magical guide to overcoming eating disorders, despite what is suggested on the author’s website. It’s a personal testimony written by someone still deeply entangled in one of the most deceptive and dangerous mental illnesses—and because of that, the content comes across not as empowering, but as extremely harmful.

⚠️ Especially in the final section, where stories from other individuals are shared, especially one of them is so horrifying, raw, and deeply vulnerable that it might severely trigger readers dealing with self-harm or suicidal ideation.

Eating disorders are a serious topic, and everyone has the right to share their experience, but the treatment and healing of mental health issues should remain in the hands of professionals: therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Of course, the book can serve as casual reading for those curious about what happens in the minds of people with eating disorders. But since it is aimed at a specific audience, we must understand that people with eating disorders often interpret such content very differently. For them, it may serve as a source of ideas rather than a warning. Because of this, such works must be tailored extremely carefully and written with a high level of responsibility, as they can easily trigger the development, recurrence, or deepening of eating disorders in those already predisposed to them.

1. in 2. del sta še nekako berljiva, 3. del je podoben ameriškim "self-help" knjigam z instant recepti. Mogoče bo bolje, če se drži glasbe.
