This is a wonderful book. It’s a story of young love, set in the Iforas Mountains in the Sahara among the nomadic Tamashek tribes. It is the story of Mid e Mid, a young boy who’s legendary among the tribes for his singing, his father’s in prison having been betrayed. Mid e mid wants revenge for his father, but first he must grow up and try to win High Summer, the most beautiful girl in the area. Red Moon is the son of the tribal leader also in love with High Summer, The plot builds the tension. The young are fighting the elders’ traditions and the new laws of the French rulers. All the while the book is full of the life of the nomads, their prized camels, their goats and cows provide their sustenance, their leather tents, how they search for pasture and wells, the wait for the rains in the Sahara. A fascinating book but a great read as well.
