Hah, reading my journals from 1985 and '86 is a trip into obscure YA novels from the late 70s and early 80s. I don't really remember this book, but a story about a cross-country game in the vein of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and "Rat Race" would have been right up my early-teen alley.
Odd that I only read it once when I really did like it. A bunch of high school boys are sent on a bicycle odyssey by their English teacher, and have to confront an enemy gang, mystery, weather, dragons, etc., to complete their quest. They try to figure out what the hell Mr. Morelli's game really is. I was only in 7th or 8th grade at the time and the boys seemed impossibly sophisticated to me, and their adventure seemed wonderfully romantic. Oh, for a good bike.
read this when I was a kid and I have fond memories of it. I am looking for a copy to see if it is as good as I remember, or if its just the wistfulness of youth.
