Haddon Robinson's method as presented in Biblical Preaching is employed in twelve expository messages, offering concrete examples of how experienced preachers have made Robinson's homiletical principles work for them. Robinson comments on each expository message, interviews each preacher, and contributes a sermon of his own. The book shows how successfully his method of developing sermons can be adapted to different contexts.
Haddon W. Robinson (PhD, University of Illinois) was the Harold John Ockenga Distinguished Professor of Preaching and senior director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. He authored numerous books, including It's All in How You Tell It and Making a Difference in Preaching.
The beauty of this book is that we get twelve sermons from different people to see a range of styles of preaching. As with any collection, each sermon may strike readers differently, so there is little value in rating each sermon. As a whole, this is a good collection of sermons, and it is beneficial to read this variety pack.
After each sermon there is analysis of the sermon by Mr. Robinson and an interview with the preacher/teacher. These are helpful features that add understanding to each sermon and help the reader gain insight into crafting sermons.
All told, this is a worthwhile book to read to give a few perspectives on what constitutes biblical sermons.
Really helpful book with 12 written sermons, an analysis of each and an interview with the preacher. Good teaching in the sermons, but the interpretations are instructive for understanding what the preacher's intent.
Very helpful to see the interviews with the preachers/speakers. “Learning from preachers about preaching sometimes is better than listening to their sermons”
