Flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, cornets, trombones, french horns, tubas.....

Lips, embrochures, reeds, note holes, valves, pistons, tube lengths....

Did you know a French Horn can have up to 17 feet of tubing??

That anyone wants to play these things is amazing.

That anyone can play them is astounding!

This book, written in 1939 (Thank you Dover books), is a scholarly and somewhat boring history of the origins and history of the development of these instruments.

According to Mr. Carse, the Germans and the French were responsible for all of them, with examples going back to 1500 or so.

An orchestra will never seem the same..
