L auteur oriente par ailleurs sa réflexion sur la place du premier conflit mondial dans une histoire de France, alors même que la guerre semble faire éclater les frontières et les particularismes nationaux pour ouvrir à un monde global. Nicolas Beaupré cherche ainsi à rendre compte de l imbrication des échelles et des espaces qui permettent de penser la première guerre mondiale, et d évaluer la fonction et la position de cette période dans le champ de notre histoire nationale.

A well-written overview up to date on the most recent historiography relating to the French experience during the Great War. It conveys the usual and necessary historical details, while also directly addressing the coercion-consensus debate--wisely adopting a middle course that recognizes both in different measures, given the diversity of situations in role, region, point in the war, etc.--plus a nuanced analysis of the "dynamic of totalization" rather than of "total war", a process rather than an overly generalized and static description. The most substantial chapter, in my reading, dealt with the war's aftermath, seen through the lens of the work positing a "sortie de guerre" enduring for years after 1918, even--as Beaupré seems to suggest--through the entire so-called interwar period. The book ends with an interesting observation about the paradox of the 1871 defeat to Prussia resulting in a stronger France, while the 1918 victory over the Central Powers resulting in a France somewhat weaker ("épuisée et durablement affaiblie").
