Welsh artist Thomas Jones (1742-1803) was a pupil of Richard Wilson, considered one of the first landscape artists, and Thomas continued with this style producing many wonderful paintings of Wales and of Naples. However, where he later differed from his teacher, was in his wonderful paintings of the backs of Italian houses and other buildings. These must have been considered very odd at the time, showing the least glamorous and ‘warts and all’ sides of architectural structures. They truly are wonderful, full of colour and texture, and often painted from an irregular viewpoint; quite extraordinary for the time.

This book accompanied an exhibition held in Cardiff, Manchester and London in 2003-2004 and presents an impressive collection of his work, much of which had never been published before. There are essays by Jones scholars, research findings and information about the artist’s techniques, as well as an insight into his life, family and travel and of his training with Richard Wilson.

An important book chronicling a truly idiosyncratic and innovative C18th Welsh artist. This is a book
I’ve been dipping into over the past couple of months. There are separate Welsh and English language versions.
