Whether it's paintings, novels, or colouring books, creating fantasy works is my biggest passion. It's also been my full time job for over ten years! I live in Australia with my husband and daughter and love food, gardening, geekery, and all things fantasy.
This was my first Selina Fenech colouring book and it will certainly not be my last. I enjoyed all but three images in this, and it definitely kept me out of mischief for quite a few hours.
I’m by no means an expert at colouring - I use pens, rather than pencils and don’t do any shading. Which is shocking to some people! This was also my first opportunity for trying out the Letraset skin colour pens, which I’ve had stuck in a drawer for a couple of years. I’m not really keen on them but they did the job. I also use any old pens that I can get my hands on, although I normally Staedtler pens, as I love their thin nibs, and is perfect for illustrations such as this.
I do find that when using pens, the colour does tend to leak through to the other side of the paper, and on my first picture, went straight through onto the next picture. I quickly learned my lesson, and always keep a sheet of paper underneath the picture I’m currently working on. So that catches all the leaks - something the skin colour pens were particularly guilty of!
I also appreciate that of the two Selina colouring books I own (I have recently purchased and started the mermaids one), she includes two sets of illustrations - so you have a duplicate of each one. As she explains, if you make a mistake, you have a do-over, or to share with a friend. For me, I haven’t used any of the duplicates, as I like to look back, and see how they originally started. I also like to look at the original artwork, which is particularly helpful if I can’t make something out.
As I mentioned, I completed all but three pictures and they were simply illustrations that particularly annoyed me, or I didn’t like.
