This book is such an excellent resource, with anecdotal evidence found nowhere else, for historical information regarding the island of Tristan da Cunha. From its earliest-known settlement, through the volcanic eruption and aftermath that followed, this is honestly the most concise resource I've found for obtaining insight into the Tristanian attitude and way of life.
Recounts the history of Tristan from discovery through 1968, including return after the volcanic activity of 1961. The structure is bookended by the author's two visits to the island, in 1938 and 1964. He also draws upon his interviews with Islanders during the years of exile. Some of the language and devices are dated, and many points about economic structure and kinship groups are too often repeated, especially through the book's final chapters. Overall, the author's genuine affection for the people and the island is apparent.
