"His Kate" weaves a tender yet emotional and passionate tale about the raw power of unconditional love. What will be the fate for Greg, Kate and Heather? How will they each choose to live their lives as one life changing event affects them all?
Sue Krawitz is an independent meeting planner with a background in marketing and public relations. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Psychology from Widener University. A dedicated volunteer at her sons’ school, Sue is also a fitness enthusiast. She lives with her two sons in the Philadelphia suburbs. His Kate is her first novel.
"His Kate" by Sue Krawitz begins with a captivating prologue with main character, Greg, visiting the grave of someone he loved. The rest of the book details Greg's life and relationships with Heather and Kate. In the end, you learn whose grave Greg was visiting and what happened.
This book captured my attention in the beginning and I wanted to know who the person was from the prologue and what had happened. I enjoyed reading about how Greg and Kate fell in love as well as the drama with Greg and Heather's relationship. However, the writing was overly detailed with unrelated information that took away from the story. I ultimately knew what would happen in the end of this book, but I was unsatisfied with the lack of drama in Greg's relationships and the undetailed explanation of the accident that caused the death.
What can I say, I am a sucker when it comes to romance novels. No matter how many times I tell myself that I don't like them, they always seem to wrap around my heart and destroy me. Which is exactly what this novel has done to me.
Full of raw emotion and power, His Kate will bring you to the verge of tears and have you rooting for the couple right until the very end. Without giving away to much, I can surely say that I will be suggesting this book to many of my friends and family members who are fans of these types of novels as well.
The novel starts off with the prologue, which is played out to be that there has been a death and the other characters are mourning the loss. Although we are given little information who it is regarding, it snatched my attention as I had to continue reading in order to get the full story. Opening chapters start with the introduction of each individual character, so the reader is able to get a better understanding of who they are and what part they play in the storyline.
Out of all the characters within this novel, I feel that I can relate most to Kate in the sense that she is self-motivated, and a book lover much like myself.
She was known to spend hours looking at all the different types of books, everything from women's fiction, classics, mysteries, drama and romance to history and biographies.
If this is not the perfect definition of me every time I approach and enter a bookstore, I don't know what is.
As well, which is something I have not seen done in other novels that I have read, Kate had a mood ring, which helps tell the mood not only of her but also of the setting in which she is placed. I enjoyed how at the back of the book, the author had put a chart explaining all of the colours and what do they mean. It was interesting to be able to tell a person mood swings based off of the colour of the ring.
Anywho, the novel takes place over a 5 year period, which can get a bit confusing but you are able to work it out with the job changes and time lapses that occur. As well, the changes of how the characters feel towards each other and how often they engage in conversations with one another is another clue as to how much time has passed between them.
The main male lead, Greg, is faced with a love triangle between his ex-girlfriend and a new found love. The only way to find out what happens is to pick up this book and start reading. As Kate puts it...
Books served as an escape, from both life and reality.
For those who are not only fans of romance novels, but also real-life situations and a novel that you can relate to, His Kate should definitely be a part of your next book shopping trip. I know for a fact that this novel will change you and make you reflect on not only your life but also the people that you meet around you.
I was a little skeptical after the first few pages of this book because I wasn't sure how I would like the transition switching from character to character within the same chapter. It was a little hard to get used to, but I liked knowing exactly how the other person was feeling then and there and not waiting chapters at a time to find out. The writing in this book was also a little too easy for my taste.
A weird thing about this book is that it's over a 5-year time span. I was a little lost wondering when she randomly jumped years ahead and never explaining what happened during that time.
Now on to the good stuff:
I don't want to spoil it, but I honestly thought I knew how this book would end. I was so wrong! The thing I liked about this book were all the plot twists and turns that came out of no where. There were things that happened that I NEVER saw coming. Which as a reader, I loved.
There were times where Kate seemed a little too depressed for no reason, and times where she seemed a little too dramatic. But overall I love how REAL the characters are. Nothing was ever too sugar-coated. I love authors/books that give me real life, it makes it very relatable.
I was debating on giving this book 3 stars, but the plot twists really pushed this to a 4. I would definitely recommend this book as a fun and easy read!
I received a copy of His Kate during a Goodreads giveaways, I would first like to thank Sue Krawitz for the copy of her amazing book!
Being a romance book sucker, His Kate was a perfect read. However even knowing the end result this book still completely and emotionally took hold of me. I was being pulled 2 different ways through out the whole book that I was unsure of how to react, who to vote for and which emotion I was feeling. This book will bring you to tears. It is full of pure powerful and raw emotion, that makes you fall in love with the couple until the very end. Being an emotional wreck after reading this book, I would still suggest it to many of my family and friend. The beginning of the book through me off, reading the prologue told me I was going to cry during this book. Switching between each prospective of the characters allowed me to see every angle of the story, there were no assumptions needed. Reading through there were random jumps of time, since the book was spaced out through 5 years, I would have liked to know what occurred in the charters lives in-between each jump. However this book kept me hooked until the very end. The characters were real and had depth to them, you saw them grow and struggled and were able to connect with them it is one of the reasons this book was a great read.
