The Knowledge: opera

Rate this book
Opera is all about intense emotion, magical music and overwhelming theatrical spectacle. In this exciting new guide, the many myths that surround opera are exploded, while its transformation from inaccessible high art to affordable, dramatically realistic and easy-to-encounter drama is revealed.

Including a brief history of opera, the powerful principal players - the maestros, superstar divas and directors- and overviews of the key operas that continue to pack out opera houses worldwide, The Knowledge: Opera demonstrates the mind-altering powers of opera. The book also looks at more recent phenomena such as cinema broadcasting of live performances, the rise of the ‘classical crossover’ star and how opera is being kept alive despite the competition from other more instantly accessible art forms.

Interesting guide to the history and evolution of opera.

One major distraction for me was the format - since the pages are small, when a 'sidebar' was thrown in, it disrupted the text and took a page. Specific opera synopses were given a two-page layout, which was well done, but also seemed randomly thrown into the text.
