In the mid-1980s the deliberately homeless author set off with bicycle and tent to see where he would end up. His travels took him through Western Europe, communist Eastern Europe and parts of the United States. He found himself dealing with machine-gun-toting border guards, deranged dogs, hurricane-edge rains and toxic local beverages. These journals also chronicle the escalating series of bicycle tours with companions that led to his time as a bike bum. Most significantly, the traveler encountered interesting, kind and generous people everywhere, regardless of which side of the “Iron Curtain” they lived on.
Bruce is a personal friend of mine and he always has such good insight and humor about life so it was fun to read all about his big bicycle trips behind the Iron Curtain in the 80's before the wall fell. I live vicariously through his crazy adventures!
