After working a number of years in Montana as a rangeman, Cuff Lockwood wants to move on to a warmer climate and sets his direction toward New Mexico where he encounters Shelly Harrison, a woman he finds hard to forget.

Lauran Bosworth Paine (born February 25, 1916 in Duluth, Minnesota – 2003 in California) was an American writer of Western fiction. Paine wrote over 900 books, including hundreds of Westerns as well as romance, science fiction, and mystery novels. He also wrote a number of non-fiction books on the Old West, military history, witchcraft, and other subjects.
His apprenticeship as a Western writer came about through the years he spent in the livestock trade, rodeos, and even motion pictures where he served as an extra because of his expert horsemanship.
I liked this story from the beginning. The main character, Cuff Lockwood, is just a cowhand. He rides into a small town and finds some trouble that is caused partial by him, but he has a choice in what happens. When he makes the right choice his life changes. Now this story put in mind of Open Range and since it was written by this author it is no wonder. This story is not about grand shoot-outs and desperate chases across the plains. It is about the men nd women, who came West to tame and settle the it. I enjoyed this story because it is a feel good story, but it is not sugary in its telling. If you like a good Western then this is one to read.
I really enjoyed this book, the first I have read by this author. It is very different from most Westerns; more thoughtful and character based. This is no wild scramble from gunfight to gunfight but a slower passed examination of a man's journey from callow youth to responsible maturity, set against the harsh background of the Western frontier.
If you like westerns then you might like this 'light reading'. Not a lot of characters to keep track of and a story that's a bit unique, I enjoyed it and I like Paine style so will read more of his stuff, (he has a multitude of books)!
A very interesting tale. Lots of unexpected turns all along the way. Keeps you surprised. Turns out a big surprise near the end until more danger occurs ; then back home in the ranch, it all works out for those who matter.
A story that has a lot to it. First of all there’s good character development. The setting, action, personal growth, regret, love, all make for a engaging tale.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The only western I had read were some Louis L’Amour books, mainly Lonesome Dove. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I enthuse book a lot.
