Spotty monsters, swinging monsters, monsters eating cake. There's one up in the apple tree--a monster cheeky as can be! A monster here, a monster monsters, monsters EVERYWHERE! 12 pages (all in color), 4 3/8 x 4 3/8.
Monsters by Louise Gardner and Linda Jenner is part of the spooky pop up series they made together. It has rhyming couplets at the last words of two pages each describing harmless and friendly looking monsters throughout. It is best read to those under five as it is not complex and has few pages to keep an older child engaged.
Language techniques such as: alliteration, rhymes, repetition and onomatopoeia make the book more engaging for children and more fun to read. The monsters are each designed in a way as to be recognisable as monsters and not some scary to the young audience. Pop-up elements make the book more fun for the young audience and something they'll want to read time and time again.
There are a few issues with the book however. Throughout the book certain sentences have too many or too few words which disrupts the flow of the book. As well as this the book uses he, he'd or he'll at the start of many sentences which for such a short book is not preferable. Finally there are no female monsters so if you plan to read this to a little girl please do be aware.
Overall however it's a lovely book for young children to read which will definantly help them calm down. All the interesting designs and elements of the book makes it fun for you to read it to them and a great book to get.
