PLUFF MUD MURDERS

"PLUFF MUD MURDERS is a gut-wrenching thrill ride
from the first word to the final punctuation. The essence
of Carpenter's characters were written in such fullness
that you can feel their warm (or ice cold) bodies to the
core. The blinding twists and turns keep readers on their
toes until the very end. It is a must read!"

In Pluff Mud Murders, author Ann Carpenter weaves a riveting mystery tale set in the Lowcountry area of Charleston, South Carolina, that follows Riley Jordan as she returns home to restart her life after years of living in New York City. Riley has been diagnosed with dissociative amnesia, a condition that has left her unable to recall personal information, and struggling to regain repressed memories from her traumatic childhood. Riley has been running from her past for too long, and now it is time to go home and face her past and start anew. But when Riley arrives at the gates of the former Radisson estate, she starts to get fleeting images and snippets of dark childhood memories and long buried secrets that someone doesn't want her to remember, and they will go to any length to stop the truth from resurfacing from the Lowcountry pluff mud.

In Pluff Mud Murders, author Ann Carpenter captivates the reader's attention from the beginning, and transports them into the middle of a gripping mystery that easily keeps them guessing and sitting on the edge of their seats. As a fan of Lowcountry mysteries, this story had everything that I could ask for: an intriguing mystery full of dark hidden family secrets, old and new murders, suspense, and surprising twists and turns, that engages the reader to follow along as Riley Jordan's long suppressed memories resurface, and as Detective Alex Keys tries to fit the puzzle pieces together, and solve the mystery behind the long buried Radisson family secrets.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the author does a wonderful job of providing a rich description of the Lowcountry setting: from its grandeur and history, to the local landmarks and the variety of sights and sounds, the reader is easily transported into the heart of Charleston, South Carolina.

Pluff Mud Murders is a fascinating Lowcountry whodunit tale that is sure to take the reader on one heck of a thrill ride!

Riley Jordan has returned home to North Carolina after years away. Riley has dissociative amnesia and cannot recall many memories from her childhood. As soon as she sees the Radisson estate she starts to remember snippets of her past.
Meetings and messages from childhood friends help her remember moments in time but not why she forgot. Riley isn’t the only person to return and now there are murders from now and the past that need to be solved and Riley may by the piece that ties them all together.
Will Riley remember her past? Will Detective Keys find the murderer? And will Riley find her peace?
I was planning to read this book over several nights but once I started I couldn’t stop and stayed up until the early hours to finish. Ann Carpenter manages to write in such a descriptive way that you get lost in the story and characters. Riley is beautifully written and it is great to watch her journey. Alex I thought was a complex character struggling with his personal feelings whilst trying to solve a crime.
I had some predictions while reading and only a few were correct. The twists and developments kept me totally engrossed. I completely enjoyed this book and would be happy to recommend it to anyone that loves a murder mystery.

EDIT: One of my criteria for reviewing a book is how I think about it later. This book has stuck with me. The place, the creepiness and general atmosphere makes me "remember" being there. Still needs some editing, but I feel I need to rate it higher for the lingering effects of the place and story the author gave me. END EDIT

I liked the intricate mystery and the plot and character twists after I got into the story. The scary parts were leavened with touches of humor and romance. The Charleston area felt real and I liked the local details. Shorter chapters made the read go quickly except when I had to just keep going!

I think the author would benefit from another pass through the book or an editor. The prologue was more obscure than needed and the first couple of chapters had too many full names and details that muddied the story flow. I almost did not read past the beginning but am glad I did. There are some typo or spell check errors such as "scull" instead of "skull" and some verb weirdness like "has" when it should be "have". These things personally bug me but did not take away from the quickly moving plot.

i enjoyed the characters - actually some of the minor ones more than the major. All characters were distinct. I do not want to spoil plot elements so will not mention specifics. A good vacation read.

Pluff Mud Murders will take hold of you pulling you deep into a stiff cadence of suspense. The book winds through each chapter like driving full speed on a narrow high mountain road, each page takes you closer to the edge. Ann Carpenter's descriptive writing talent transports you to the middle of the murder investigation so well you can smell the stale cigarette smoke, musty over brewed coffee of the police station to the murmur of the city's underbelly and the scent of Charleston's Lowcountry entity -- Pluff Mud, the slippery, shiny brown-gray, sucky mud, with a distinctive smell like none other, of the tidal flats and spartina grass salt marshes.

For me, Pluff Mud Murders was a great read. Mike Carta, voice-over talent/actor, and producer.
