This book is a new short history of Spain during a crucial period, the reign of Alfonso XIII (1902-1931). Traditionally, this has been seen as a time that epitomized the worst features of 'old Spain': a backward country, poor and chronically unequal, with a government dominated by a tiny oligarchy ruling over a corrupt system an anomaly in Western Europe. However, this study, in line with the most recent historiography, offers a new insight into the period as one that was actually characterized by extensive modernization in Spanish society and politics. Spain experienced, albeit in an unbalanced way, many of the changes already in progress in other European countries, such as urbanization, industrialization, mass migration, the rise in literacy, secularization, and the emergence of mass politics. It then suffered profound conflicts associated with these changes, and a political dynamic of reform and reaction, revolution and counter-revolution. The book is divided into four main

JAVIER MORERNO-LÚZON (Hellín, 1967) es catedrático de Historia del Pensamiento y de los Movimientos Sociales y Políticos en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, donde desarrolla su labor docente e investigadora desde 1997. Ha sido ayudante en la UNED y profesor o investigador visitante en centros como Harvard University, la École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales de París, la London School of Economics and Political Science y New York University. Ha sido asimismo subdirector del Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales y vicepresidente de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea. Especialista en la vida política de la España de la Restauración (1875-1923), ha publicado múltiples trabajos sobre clientelismo, partidos, elecciones, parlamentarismo, élites, monarquía y nacionalismo español. En la actualidad investiga sobre conmemoraciones nacionalistas, símbolos nacionales y relaciones entre monarquía e imaginario españolista durante el reinado de Alfonso XIII. Sus últimos libros publicados son, como autor principal, Modernizing the Nation. Spain during the Reign of Alfonso XIII, 1902-1931 (Brighton, Sussex Academic Press, 2012) y, como editor científico y junto a Xosé M. Núñez Seixas, Ser españoles. Imaginarios nacionalistas en el siglo XX (Barcelona, RBA, 2013). Es miembro del comité ejecutivo de la Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies y dirige el Seminario de Historia Contemporánea del Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Gasset, de Madrid. Colabora habitualmente en el diario El País.
