My Review:

Daily devotion is a common theme at our house. And since I am a reviewer a lot come across my desk. So take it from me, this is a good one. It is comprised of over 50 different pastors and ministry leaders. It is big enough for each week of the year. It isn't too stuffy or full. It gives you straight summary or lesson along with a verse or two to connect us back to the cross.

My favorite one was the one discussing David and talking about being proofed by God such as a metal smith does with fine metals. And how God will put you through the fire in order for all the impurities to rise to the surface. God knows what it will take to break us. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

It's hard when it comes to that time of God refining us like pure gold. It is a hard road but one worth it, nonetheless. Devotionals are a great gift for the holidays and many times you can find some that beautifully bound and this is one of them. It would make a great gift this holiday season.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

No matter what I am studying in the Bible, I always enjoy starting my day with a devotional. It’s a little tidbit of thought and encouragement that I can reflect on and carry throughout my day. So, when I received the opportunity to review The Gift of Jesus, I looked forward to seeing what devotional thoughts might be there to help me on my way.

The Gift of Jesus is a 52-week devotional. Each week of the devotional is written by a different evangelical pastor or writer, and each week contains five days of devotion on a specific theme. That theme varies throughout the book. For example, week one of the devotional is written by pastor Johnny Hunt and is about Hope, specifically the hope we have in Jesus.

These devotionals are standard devotional fare. Usually there are one or two verses referenced, followed by 3-4 paragraphs of reflection or personal illustration. Then there is a short prayer to help you focus your prayers for the day. This is an excellent way to start the day!

I don’t often mention the construction of a book that I’m reviewing, but I do have to mention that I love the imitation leather and softness on this one. This is also a little bigger than a standard devotional and really feels nice in the hands. It’s beautiful construction also would make it a great gift for a friend or family member.

This devotional has been written by 51 men, Southern Baptist ministers and leaders. There are six devotions for each week, all six written by the same man. They are identified as Monday, Week 1, etc., so the book can be started any time. A relevant verse is provided before the devotion and a prayer after.

The devotions center on being faithful in our Christian walk. The topics vary but are a good mix between encouragement and challenge. There are devotions on the workplace, the leading of the Holy Spirit, responding to trials, struggling with alcohol, understanding the character of God, showing respect for spiritual leaders, the falseness of the prosperity gospel, parenting, and much more. The depth of the devotions vary from asking the reader to follow Jesus (153) to the struggle of faith when God seems absent (158).

As is often the case in books written by a variety of authors, there is inconsistency in the quality and impact of the devotions. Some were really challenging while others were rather ho-hum. Overall, however, I did appreciate them.

I would recommend this book to men, since the devotions were written by men. The illustrations of riding dirt bikes and sons playing football would seem to appeal mostly to men. There are no surprises in these devotionals, just good solid teaching.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
