A legacy of bullying and insecurity has left its mark on Troy, affecting all his interactions in the present. Adam is an ex-hockey player turned tattoo artist who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. But no matter how hard he tries, time and again he sends the easily scared Troy running.

I would say that I am first a reader and then a writer. My fascination with books goes way back into the past when I didn't even know I could read something that wasn't given to me in school. Writing came later. First when I tried writing down the plots of the movies I found overwhelming and later in the form of a very dark blog that connected me with people I still consider very good friends.

When in reading I always reached for happy ending romances that helped me deal with the bad side of the world, while in my short stories characters died and their life usually reflected the reality that surrounded mine.

In time, vampires and shifters took the place of knights in shiny armors and I still searched for that happy ending . But with the years also came that wish for something edgier.
My current reading habits take me daily into the world of men, where kink is preferable and angst the realistic side of life in my dose of fiction. It was only natural that my fingers followed my thoughts and I came to a point where men only ogled men and women became side characters.

Somehow out of love for reading a writer was born. I won't say that the handsome men walking through my imagination have everything a reader might want. They are usually troubled, lost and insecure, but as they slowly stroll through my worlds, they eventually find their happy ending.

1.5 HEARTS--When a good premise doesn't translate to the finished product.

*sighs*

My first Valentina Heart is safe to say: an all around bust. Told in alternating 1st POV, the story is mainly about Troy, a 28 year old programmer who wears the scars from high school bullying which dictates his social interactions with others. He had a weird breakup with an incestuous lover, carries a sort of torch for his ex's brother/lover and goes back and forth with being shy, direct and scared. Troy meets 38 year old Adam, an ex pro hockey player, tattoo artist and they barely talk. They have minimal, cut off interactions for a number of weeks with periods of no conversation. And when they did talk it was like reading nails on a chalkboard, their dialogue was rough.

This story tested my rarely used DNF. I knew I was in trouble from the first paragraph in the prologue when the contemporary character referred in 1st POV he went through his "morning absolutions". Ablutions is an antiquated choice for someone to use as a teenager in high school. The dialogue, the internal thoughts read formal/stilted/translated.

My rating isn't based on the editing or lack thereof due to the fact I read an ARC. I hope the finished product had a strong edit: pacing was weird, the use of flashbacks weren't effective, the main characters' relationship was diminished by the aforementioned issues. If the pair had chemistry--the odd hot and cold thing Troy did was a turn off--it could have made the story better.

If I had to describe the story it was like jumbled pieces of different puzzles that were forced to fit...but it didn't work.

I don't know if the secondary characters were from past books, but it read like it. I didn't come in knowing their backstories - the twin lovers or rock star/tattoo artist couple with a little kid. Something was missing to make this story work, it focused on weird tangents like a cell phone accidentally dropped in a toilet as a plot device or flashbacks of Troy being bullied but no explanation as to why 'Helen' was important. The flashbacks would have worked better either all in the beginning or edited different to use as a comparison or guide into why Troy was the way he was. And Adam's POV did nothing to move the story along, everything on his end was forced and odd. I went into this book knowing nothing about the main pair and I ended knowing nothing about this pair as a couple...except for the sex which was a personality implant for the both of them.

Why not just 1 heart or DNF? I'd rather DNF something worth it. Even if it didn't have all the issues, Good Together would probably be a 3 - it's too short for the issues that the shy main character had to possibly work through. And the character development failed for both men. Just saying things that you have doesn't mean the characters are layered.

The best things about Good Together are why it's rated 1.5 Hearts: 1 Heart for the cover and blurb, 1/2 Heart for the very late sex scene (didn't fit how the characters were portrayed but I can't knock wall pounding)

Otherwise, this story was a big:

I'm not writing the author off. I'll check out her paranormal books, if this book's sex scene is to be an indicator, they might be better.

Good Together for me was not just a story about finding the person you love but it was about the importance of words and how they can hurt or help a person to heal.

This is the story of Troy a man who was bullied throughout his childhood leaving him with the kind of scars that don’t show on the surface but have a very strong impact on his day to day life and it’s about Adam an ex-hockey player turned tattoo artist when injuries cut his professional hockey career short. Adam knows what he wants and he’s not afraid to go after it. But getting Troy is going to take more determination than even Adam is use to and it’s also going to take a lot of patience and understanding and a little luck which he seems to be in short supply of when a series of unfortunate events appear to conspire against him.

What worked for me…
In concept I really liked this story 4 stars shouldn't have been a problem. I liked that it addressed a very relevant social issue but not in a preachy way. Bullying is real and long after the bully is gone what they’ve done remains and the reader gets to see this through Troy’s eyes.

I liked Adam and Troy together they were sweet and I loved the patience and persistence that they both needed at times to make their relationship happen.

I also appreciated that while we are told that Troy had less than stellar parents it didn’t feel like something that was given excessive focus especially since taking the severity of the bullying that Troy was subjected in conjunction to the prolonged period that it occurred over I had already assumed that Troy's parents were less than stellar.

What didn’t work…
In execution the story at times left me feeling like I was missing details and it felt like there were time jumps that left things feeling a little disjointed for me. I wanted to sink into the story and become involved in what was happening and just about the time that I was getting there things would shift and I felt like I was being jerked back from the people and events.

Regardless of what didn't work I found myself genuinely wanting to see Adam and Troy get their chance at being together. I was also interested in learning more about their friends, Michael , Gabriel, Zach & Noah.

While this was only a 3 star read for me I found it easy to imagine that with a little more editing and fleshing out of the details this could have easily been 4 maybe even 5 stars so I'll definitely be keeping a watchful eye to see what this author has in store for us next.

Good Together was just ok for me. It was a quick read, but it just didn't seem very believable or fully fleshed out. I also would have loved for it to have more of a focus on hockey and tattoos, and less on bullying and crap parents.

He leído las otras obras de esta autora y me han gustado. Esta me ha dejado bastante indiferente. Quizás por ser tan corta o como ha desarrollo la relación pero no me ha gustado : (

I don't know what the fuck everyone else was reading, but I fucking LOVED this!

Troy's insecurity and feelings of unworthiness come from a long childhood of bullying and humiliation. Added on to this was his family/home situation where he was ignored and neglected.
Of which left him with always thinking that he is not worthy of this person or that. This comes to the forefront when he meets Adam.

Adam who seems larger than life and brighter than the sun is assertive and goes after the things he wants and likes. In this case, that happens to be Tory.

However, when Troy's feelings of unworthiness get the better of him and he acts cold and distant, Adam thinks maybe this time he needs to let it go. Maybe they aren't meant to be... but he wants too badly to see where this could lead and even though he wants to throw in the towel he doesn't want to give up. Will he be able to make Troy see just how much of a jewel he is that deserves to be cherished?

I've read several other books from this author and have definitely enjoyed them, but this just did not work for me. It's probably not a good sign when you're reading a story and want to read about a *different* couple in the same book instead. (in case you're wondering - )

The premise of the story interested me, but I think the execution and the conflicts that were created just didn't work (I mean, I know I don't know all my friends' cell phone numbers, but I'd sure as hell find another way to call someone if my phone died rather than let 2 weeks go by. Facebook? Tell your coworkers in case someone calls?). And also, maybe the length of the story hurt the overall experience, too. Because the epilogue was CRAZY hot, but it actually seemed out of place after everything that Tony and Adam went through.

And honestly, I didn't really see what they saw in each other...like how Adam couldn't get Tony off his mind right away, but they had hardly interacted and knew nothing about each other. It was just hard to get on board with these two as a couple trying to make it work, I just didn't get the connection between them.

I can definitely recommend stories from this author - I love her Mending the Rift series, but I don't think I would recommend this one.

I finished this a few weeks ago and have been struggling with the review and rating since then. I guess I should admit that I struggled to even finish! Obviously this was a miss for me. I just wanted more from the characters, I think if the author had focused less on secondary characters (definitely less on the budding incestuous relationship with Michael and Gabriel) it could have been better, maybe it was possible in the real estate she had but in this case it just didn't work.

First, Troy, left badly traumatized by bullying, at first his story was compelling, then you just wanted any kind of movement forward. I for one was hoping for some therapy to be recommended or included in the story.

Then Adam, SO wanted to hear more about hockey, with how much he loved it I thought it would be a central part of his story.....not so much.

The two of them together was, well, awkward. Their conversations stilted and it just didn't feel right. Why was Adam drawn to Troy in the first place? I hate to question the whole love at first sight thing they were maybe going for but I didn't get it. The one intimate scene at the end absolutely did not fit.

So yeah, lots of undeveloped characters and unfulfilled potential in this one. 2.5 stars, rounded down.

I received an ARC of this story from the publisher in exchange for a fair, unbiased review.

This was a two star book for me, right up until the very end. My biggest problem with the book is that I always felt like I was missing something. Even though there's no indication that this is part of a series, I feel like there was a lot of back story that it was assumed the reader understood. I always felt like I didn't quite get what was happening, or who the characters were.
While I was frustrated with Troy, it was his actions in the end that almost redeemed the book for me. I was happy to see that the author didn't go for the easy drama when Adam left to take care of his mother. Instead, Troy handled things rationally, perhaps for the first time in the story.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3 stars

The story unfolds through alternating first-person perspective from both Troy and Adam. Which, to me, means the reader ought to be privy to all the deepest, darkest secrets and insecurities of both characters. On the plus side, we do get up close and personal with the hellish abuse Troy suffered through in school. That backstory goes a long way to justifying how skittish Troy acts. The bullying itself is nothing short of drastic, and we only get a few brief glimpses at what happened. My only beef about these flashbacks is that, well, the felt a bit—under researched? I find it hard to imagine any school setting could be blind to the kinds of “extracurriculars” visited upon Troy and then take no action to mitigate the situation. So that aspect of the story feels weak to me, but at least it’s a clear connection between Troy’s past and his present.

With Adam, his past is all cryptic references. I found this somewhat annoying because his chapters are told in first person the same as Troy’s. I really couldn’t figure out why his past needed to be such a huge secret —especially considering how little it affected the action in the story. In fact, though some of these events seem to have a big effect on him, it’s pithily described on page, so that was a bit of a let down. Adam is also the one is adamant he and Troy can be “good together,” but I found little in his narration to substantiate why he feels this way—beyond a few comments about how he’s pushing 40, so it’s now or never. That and instalove never sat well with me as the basis for starting a relationship, but maybe that’s just me.

Troy was bullied horrible all through school and he’s understandably leery around people he doesn’t know or look as if they can hurt him in any way. He was dating a guy named Gabriel for a short time but they didn’t work out. When, a few months after they break up, Gabriel’s twin Michael calls Troy up and asks him to go out with him and some friends, he agrees. He has a good time but he’s attracted to a guy named Adam. He’s attracted but scared at the same time. Adam is tattooed, muscular and has a bushy beard. He just doesn’t feel safe around him.

Adam is smitten with Troy from minute one but can’t understand what he’s done to garner the cold shoulder from Troy. Things will go well for a bit and then Troy will turn on the ice and Adam is just confused.

Once the pair confess their pasts to each other they decide to start again but when Adam seems to fall out of communication, Troy is worried that he’s done something to scare Adam off.

This was a cute yet pretty simple story. It wasn’t very long so Troy and Adam get together pretty quickly despite Troy’s misgivings about Adam. Once they get to know each other things are good but they’re hardly together before Adam has to leave on a family emergency and his phone is ruined so he can’t call Troy. I’m thinking that the ruined phone was added in to build tension between the two MC’s but it really didn’t do all that much. Once Adam was back Troy and him were then a couple. I would have liked to have seen them draw the romance out a bit more so that they could get to know each other better. That didn’t happen but it was still a cute story.

Okay, first I’ve not read the first one’s in this series and in fact when I said yes I did not realize it was a series book. However, reading this, you definitely got the feeling that you are missing something. Not enough for me to take the enjoyment away, but enough that I actually thought that maybe it was a part something of something.

In this one, we have Troy, a late twenties guy that through out his school and probably beyond has been damaged and then plagued by insecurities. The author does a wonderful job giving us his back story while staying in the present story. We do get flash backs of some hard times while he was a kid in school and those are hard to read, but to understand the man he is you need them.

Adam, is a harder character, we really didn’t get much from him. Maybe he had a charming childhood into adulthood? We did get a little but overall Adam is an enigma. This is my only complaint, wish we had more Adam.

These two are interesting, Troy basically a damaged scared man and Adam over confidant yet insecure in his owe right. I really enjoyed watching these two fumble along until they could get on the same page and work it out.

I will be looking up the previous ones and hoping for G and M book in the future.

This is a sweet short story. I enjoyed the read.

If I had to describe this story I would say that it is a story about getting over your past so you are able to move on and move forward.

Troy in my opinion could have done with seeking some counseling after the cruel way that he was treated in school. Even at the age of 28 he is still living with the pain of being bullied and becaus of this he is about to push away what could possibly be the right person for him.

Adam feels a connection to Troy from almost the first moment that they meet. I think that Adam is intrigued with the weird behavior that Troy puts off towards him at their first meeting. Adam is confused about how Troy pulls away constantly once they start to get close but I think that he feels that they could be perfect for one another. Now he just needs to convince Troy of the same thing.

I enjoyed this read. It was a sweet short story and is a feel good book in a way that it is nice to read someone being able to get over their insecurities in order to be able to accept the happiness in their lives.

Good Together was not GOOD. First of all Troy was previously involved with a now ex, that is involved in an incestuous relationship with his brother. Yes, I had to read the interactions more than once, but... Ewe.

He meets Adam an ex-hockey played turned tattoo artist and they enter into a relationship. I found no connection between the characters. The dialogue between the mc's was non-existent, to choppy, when there was dialogue. I'm not going to brow beat this book, I'm just going to say it wasn't for me and be on my way.

Good together by Valentina Heart

I really wanted to like this story, not just because I love reading Valentina Heart’s stories, but because I think people underestimate how much bullying can affect a person’s self esteem.

I think this story had potential but it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted more of Troy and Adam together; instead the majority of the story is about them trying to get together. There is a lot of misinterpretations, and missed chances, but not enough romance or plot.

This book left me wanting more, not because it was a cliffhanger, but because it seemed incomplete.
