Apparently this is the last of the Dave Dashaway books. I’m not sure why, perhaps readers became too sceptical about Dave’s achievements, or perhaps the advent of WWI changed the publishing landscape. Anyhow, it’s been a fun, though rather unbelievable series. In this story, Hiram gets much more of a showing than Dave, and even gets his own sidekick. Dave’s illustrious success raised him a little too high, and made him less accessible as a character. And perhaps therein lies the answer to why the series ended. Hiram is a fun character, and I wish him all the best in the land of fiction. But unfortunately, Hiram Dobbs just isn’t an exciting enough name for him to carry the series on.
