The book of Joshua stands at a pivotal point in biblical history as the nation of Israel transitioned from a life of wandering in the wilderness to conquering and possessing Canaan, the land of promise. The God who redeemed his people from bondage in Egypt gave them a land of their own just as he swore to Abraham.
From encampment on the eastern banks of the Jordan River to dramatic victories, a critical setback, and eventual settlement, the book of Joshua recounts key events in redemptive history, events that mark the fulfillment of God's gracious word, demonstrate Israel's weaknesses, and highlight the Lord's fidelity to every promise he had made. His covenant faithfulness reminds us that he is a God who can be trusted. His covenant fulfillment, in turn, points us to a greater Joshua, the Lord Jesus Christ.
In Every Promise of Your Word, learn anew to rely on the God who keeps his every promise and see Jesus as he is revealed in the Scriptures of the Hebrew Bible.
Rhett Dodson is the pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Hudson, Ohio. He previously served as an associate pastor and seminary professor. Originally from Pickens, South Carolina, Rhett has a PhD in Old Testament. He and his wife, Theresa, live in Hudson.
In Every Promise of Your Word, Dr. Rhett Dodson has gifted us with a commentary on Joshua that is technically careful and accurate, Biblically faithful and trustworthy, theologically rich and satisfying, and pastorally insightful and sensitive. Clearly Dodson has done his research, demonstrating familiarity with the academic literature on Joshua and arguing his case well. But his prose flows like a river that can carry the weight of scholarly debate and yet float the hungry soul to still waters of reflection where they can meet afresh with God. Faithful to its subtitle (The Gospel According to Joshua) Dr. Dodson consistently interprets the text though the lens of the New Covenant, setting our Lord before us with in a beauty that invites us to love and trust Him more deeply.
Largely good, careful exegetical work, with an eye always on the Christian life. While Dodson provided decent work in the original context of Joshua, his real contribution is the way he moves every section to worshiping Christ. Excellent in showing how every part of the book of Joshua is ultimately about paving the way for and magnifying Christ.
This isn't a commentary on Joshua as much as I is a series of expository sermons to be read alongside the book. I profited by reading it on the whole. The best feature is Pastor Dodson's relentless application. He shows how key parts of the book foreshadow and symbolize Christ's victory over sin and reconquest of the earth.
Now that I'v finished this, I'm going to go and reread Joshua so I can see these riches again for myself.
This is probably my favorite commentary on Joshua. I highly recommend it. Dale Ralph Davis' is good too, but this goes in a direction that is extremely helpful for drilling down deep.
