A considerate but skittish Siamese cat named Luna babysits three new puppies ("Come on, pups, your mother looks exhausted and could use a nap") by taking them on a tour of their home, which they haven't yet had a chance to explore. In each spread, Luna warns the puppies of the danger that she believes is lurking in that particular room ("Follow me, follow me. This is the dining room where the family eats. But watch out for that huge cabinet...Trust me, trust me, I've heard snakes hissing, it is almost certainly fully of vipers.") There are dozens of flaps to lift, and we see that each room is indeed infested with critters...but not the ones Luna thinks are there. I was really taken with the illustrations of the charming old house, and I enjoyed lifting the flaps as much as my son did. It was interesting that not every flap revealed a surprise. The dishwasher in the kitchen, for example, is filled with dishes. A big book on a stand opens to reveal botanical illustrations. And some are charmingly surprising. It's the sort of book that rewards close inspection -- there are many amusing details.

The book was an impulse buy for my son's birthday, and happily, he does seem to like it. I came across it in a store here in Queens which I visited for the first time this month, the Astoria bookshop ( http://www.astoriabookshop.com/ ). I have to confess that while I very much like the idea of small independent bookstores existing, I sometimes shy away from them, because being used to the more moderate prices of used bookstores, and having access to almost any newly published book in the vast library system of Queens, I feel guilty going in, when I know I'm not likely to buy anything. However, I really loved this store; it seemed everywhere I turned there was an intriguing book that I didn't know existed that I wanted to pick up. And so after lengthy and enjoyable browsing I finally managed to overcome my parsimony; some stores are worth it.

Luna, the Siamese cat, leads the puppies on a tour of the house warning them of all the horrid creatures she is sure live behind closed doors in various places. Readers can lift the flaps and see if Luna's ideas about the causes of the strange sounds she hears are correct or not.

Luna obviously has a very good imagination. As do little kids. I definitely imagined all sorts of horrid things making the weird noises in the night. The much more innocent and cute causes of the strange noises found by lifting the flaps can help remind kids that there's usually a very simple and not so horrid answer as to where the weird noises at night come from. I suggest for an adult to open up all the flaps the first time because some open in unexpected directions and I can see overeager little readers tearing them off trying to get them to go the wrong way. Recommended to little animal lovers and lift-the-flap book fans.

Another charming book, both in story and illustrations, this time Luna the cat takes new puppies on a tour of the house. Luna has many irrational fears caused by a runaway imagination and not investigating. Readers lift the flaps to discover that the things she is saying do not match up with the truth. In the end, the puppies go into a cabinet to reveal that only friendly mice who make snacks live inside.

Highly recommended for children with overactive imaginations.
