Minus Hour

Rate this book
Miami, Sun, sand and one of the world’s most famous beaches. Beneath the surface is a seething cauldron of evil at the top of which is the Skin Trade. Thousands of young women go missing in the city every year. If they aren’t found within 72 hours, they won’t be found at all. When Jenny Colt and her friends vanish without a trace, the police are helpless to find them. With time running out, Jenny’s step-mother reaches out to the ladies of Shadowlands. All she has is a single image from Jenny’s cellphone and a frantic cry for help, but it’s enough. As the clock ticks, decorated veteran Smoak MacKenna leads her team of misfits into the dark heart of Miami’s underworld, where one dead-end leads to another and the oldest of friends become the worst enemies imaginable. But even in darkness, there is hope.

Skye Knizley is the USA Today bestselling author of the Storm Chronicles series, an urban fantasy tale that mixes mystery, magic and horror, Midnight Roads, her homage to road movies with a dash of mystery and horror and the Shadowlands series of modern adventure/mysteries. All of her books feature strong female leads who can hold their own the men and then some, witticisms and of course Skye’s trademark snark.

Skye lives in the middle of nowhere, the small town life appeals to her and is conducive to writing. When she isn’t writing Skye can be found camping, motorcycling and hiking with her psychotic Siberian husky.

Skye is also a proud gamer girl and an avid fan of roleplaying games. She currently participates in a weekly game held at a local gaming store (stop in and say ‘hi!’) and is the writer and game-master of a private Fantasy Flight Star Wars game held once a month.

Just keeps getting better!

I hate to say it, but I actually enjoyed the Shadowlands more than the Storm series. Lots of action and entirely lovable characters. Can't wait for their next adventure. Skye's writing has really improved. I don't consider her an indie author anymore....she's one of the big girls now!

Dnf. First one was clunky. The writing focuses on all the wrong things. Plots are weak, and the characters are barely fleshed out. Pretty two dimensional.

From The Horror And Ashes Of The Past Emerges A New Monster

This series must be read in order. The first book is Ashen Rayne. This is the second book. I can't wait to read the next one!

Smoak has Blaze and that makes her happier than she has ever been. Even with Ariana she wasn't this happy... But true love comes with a steep price. If anything ever happened to Blaze she would cease to be anything but a cold blooded killer bent on vengeance and revenge. Haunted by the past and pain of losses and almost losses it seems like every day is a fierce struggle. Finding out Ari's daughter has been taken with two of her friends leaves Ash and Smoak in a frenzied search for the girls and the monsters who took them. Who is behind the kidnapping? Is it just new human traffickers? Or something far more sinister reaching up from the past? Isn't it odd that a girl so close to them would become a victim so soon after they stopped the last human trafficking ring permanently?

Set in both the past and the present, this book weaves together seemingly unconnected events to create an enthralling tapestry that pulls together the big picture in the most shocking and mesmerizing manner possible. From the ashes and horror of a mission gone wrong to the glittering beauty that disguises the dark underbelly of Miami there is not a boring moment to be found in this intense and suspenseful story of modern superheroes filled with sinister mysteries and enough action and adventure to keep you always on the edge of your seat! You never know what will happen next... Only that giving up is never an option!

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy snarky goodness in their thrill packed action suspense modern superheroes without the cape adventures with a dash of romance ;)

At first the back and forth (or reminder of it with the chapter headers was annoying) really made me wonder, because it didn't quite seem relevant. Of course at the beginning it isn't supposed to! Duh, me!

There's a strong relationship with Blaze and Kam, which is nice to see. Blaze refuses to be a shrinking violet, even though she's absolutely out of her league in Smoak's world - but she's really trying. She wants to be there for the woman she loves, because that woman has been there for her.

And Ashley has a potential friend of sorts she meets after breaking in. I would really love to see more of them (it's questionable if Ash wants to get involved or not), but even if they just stayed friends or she helps Ash with her connections (and offers protections over her and Smoak??)... that would be interesting to see too. The two women had a back and forth that was interesting, suspenseful, sexy, flirty, fun, all while keeping a slight undertone of danger. I loved it!
