A Cage-Match Against The King Of Beasts, And Earth Is The Ring

One man, at the helm of mankind's most advanced machine, is all that stands in the way of Armageddon.

Amateur boxer Silvio Echegaray has lost more than his most recent bout. He's lost sight in one of his eyes. With his professional hopes in tatters, he wonders how he'll be able to provide for his small family.

But just as he reaches the end of his rope, fate smiles upon him.

Silvio receives an unexpected offer from the robotics arm of a well-known corporation. Aderhold Corporation is looking to expand its robotics division and has developed a cutting-edge mech, the X-001 ARTEMIS. The deal is a simple one: Silvio must travel to Iceland and assist the team of researchers by stepping into the cockpit to test the machine's capabilities.

Meanwhile, a small town in rural Michigan is decimated. The emergence of a monolithic creature from a lake trench threatens the whole of America's Heartland. After repeated military interventions, the creature proves immune to conventional weaponry.

Silvio is then offered a job he can't refuse: Pilot ARTEMIS into battle against the dangerous creature. In doing so, he has a chance to reclaim the glory he once sought as a boxer, and will have more eyes on him than any matchup in the ring could ever bring.

And with a little luck, perhaps he'll save Earth, too.

BONECRUSHER is a Kaiju thriller novel of roughly 54,000 words, and is the first in a series. It contains instances of coarse language and scenes of violence. It also contains a cliff-hanger ending. Reader discretion is advised.

You know, nothing gets me more than when someone rides the coattails of another's epic adventure. Sometimes, ideas are hard to come by, I get that, but Bonecrusher, by Ambrose Isben, felt like a very close copy of 2013's blockbuster hit, Pacific Rim! I'm not saying it's not a good story, but when I read the book, all I kept doing was flashing backing to the movie and how I just wasn't interested! I finished the book, but it was rather difficult.
So why was it hard to read? Bonecrusehr is about a man, Silvio, who's a boxer; and not a good one. He's just been handed his butt to him on a wooden platter, he got so beaten down he's blind in one eye and there's no money coming in to care for his girlfriend and daughter. Why? Because Silvio is selfish! His dream of wining the Golden Gloves has pushed him so long, he's foregone any desire to have nice things or nice things for his family. His sacrifice was theirs too!

He's never worked a real job in his life- all for the sake of boxing. And because of this, they live in a run-down apartment in a not so great part of town and living hand to mouth. Until he realizes he can never box again. Then he goes on a tangent, throwing tantrums and breaking his own furniture and stuff! He was a brat! It wasn't until he was offered a job for a multi-million dollar corporation that he's feeling top again. But at what cost?

And at the same time, in Lake Lilliana, someone's awakened Godzilla- I mean a Kaiju- I mean... Colossus. Or Colly, since that's what the folks in Michigan are calling the giant, reptilian monster that rose from the deep! So what happens? Good old Silvio is called to battle. He's gonna box the kaiju into oblivion, then cut it down with his Voltron-like sword! I was like, "Really?"

Being a fan of giant monsters I'm thrilled that's there's a now a book genre labeled as "kaiju thriller". Looking around I happen to stumble across this book. I wasn't sure at first, it says upfront that's part one of a four part series, and whomever wrote the book's description was nice enough to note that it has a cliffhanger ending. Then I read there was a giant robot involved, so sold.

The story itself was alright, we mainly follow a boxer named Silvio, who's less than lackluster career ends thanks to a in ring injury. While he wallows around a bit wonder what he's going to do to support his family he get's a job offer from a corporation. Thinking he's just going in to a low level, therefore extremely boring, entry level grunt job he's instead hired for their robotic division because they think he would be perfect to test pilot their new highly advanced giant robot. Not a spoiler, this is also in the description. But around the time he's leaving to begin the test trails a giant creature emerges from a lake in Michigan.

As I said the book follows Silvio, although there is a chapter here and there that focuses on someone else, mainly to keep the plot with the monsters going since Silvio, and apparently the team that built and maintain the Robot, named ARTEMIS, and the pilot running. Mainly just the robot. Silvio seems like a nice enough character to get behind, Unfortunately you don't see enough of his girlfriend and daughter to get a good enough read on them. The other characters you meet seem a tad one dimensional. For example the scientist that created the robot, as implied earlier, cares more about the function of ARTEMIS and how to improve "her" and there's this army commander who's basically every loud, angry military man in charge you ever seen.

The story itself is pretty good, it moves along at a pretty brisk pace. There is a twist I kind of seen coming, a combination of seeing stuff like this before and the author telegraphing it a bit early on. But i would recommend it if you're looking for a quick read.
