A fascinating pointillistic piece exploring family dynamics, secrets and hidden passions. The character drawing is particularly rich.

I’ve been wanting to read this because I read that Michel Tremblay considers this his best work. Having now read it, I have to say that I’m floored by that. Were I to be asked, I would not say that this is his best work. I didn’t like this very much—I found the themes of incest (desired incest?) to be extremely disturbing.
I think all of Tremblay’s novels are much stronger and more compelling than this.

Faudrait trouver l'angle. Idée de scéno très claire. Belles discussions avec l'équipe à venir. Faque oui un jour surement peut etre

This is a big punch in the gut. Would be very interested to see this on stage.

191. Bonjour, La, Bonjour by Michel Tremblay
This is a reread because it was a new translation. I couldn’t see that much difference from the original, but I did find that the play really holds up from its first English performance in 1975. Serge, the baby of the family, has come home to Montreal from a three-month trip in Paris. His widowed mostly deaf father, Armand, lives with two of Serge’s elderly aunts, both of whom are ill and hate each other. Serge’s two oldest sisters are both trying to escape from loveless marriages, and try to manipulate him into supporting their causes. Serge is in a relationship with his sister Nicole, which most of the family knows about and wants to end. The scenes are between characters and named Duet, Solo, Octet, etc. There are no directions about staging and I really wonder about the scenes and staging. This is one of the few Tremblay plays with a nearly happy ending, although many readers/viewers will not agree with it.

This was truly a unique piece of play writing. I always have a hard time deciding how to rate plays because they're meant to be seen and not read, and sometimes it's difficult to stage a play in your head while reading it on paper. This could be excellent on stage, or it could be horrid. It would depend fully on the skills of the actors and directors. The cover said the playwright wanted to strip the narrative down to the absolute basics, and he did, there are no directions and no prologue into who these people are to each other. But I felt like I had a grip on who was who and what was what most of the time, so that's kind of impressive. I liked this weird little piece.

The cover says Tremblay wanted to strip his play of all elements that are not absolutely necessary, and indeed, the absence of dramatis personae or stage directions makes it a little difficult to figure out who's talking to whom and where, but then, considering the plot, giving out the characters' relations at the beginning would have spoiled the effect by revealing too much too soon. I'm curious to see how it works out on stage.
