Can one girl in a red hood defeat an Evil Queen?
When the Evil Queen kidnaps Lulu's grandmother, Lulu embarks on a quest to free the Sisters, the most powerful sorceresses of the land, to defeat the queen. But the Sisters, Rapunzel, Ariel, Aurora, and Snow White are cursed and Prince Charming will stop at nothing to stop Lulu.
With the help of her new friends, Daniel and Pan, Lulu has to overcome traps, thorns, and pirates to free the Sisters.
Including an excerpt from Eye of the Queen, Timeless is an exciting new fairy tale retelling full of magic, werewolves, kleptomaniac imps, and red hoods.
I am a homeschooled indie author in high school who writes under the penname Grace Anthony. I live in rural Illinois and am a passionate reader, writer, and rider. I am often found writing on a blue laptop named Saphira. I am a self-proclaimed chocoholic, introvert, and am addicted to coffee. I plan on writing many more books in the future.
Note: I received a free copy of Timeless in exchange for an honest review. Star Rating: 3 stars Age group: Late elementary or young middle grade.
The premise of the story excited me--I love fairy tale retellings and am always ready for another good mash-up. Timeless certainly doesn't disappoint in that regard--Snow White and other princesses are the powerful women of this world, fighting against the Evil Queen. Unfortunately, it turns out she's too powerful for them...and now Lulu, a young girl in a red hood, may be their only hope.
Story-wise, the overall plot is interesting and I liked the characters (although Lulu felt a little over the top at times, and her repeated fainting didn’t endear her to me.) However, some plot elements didn’t quite work for me—such as Lulu not recognizing the significance of her grandmother’s eye color, and the fact that she’d never heard of the prophecy of sorts regarding herself, although other people she meets know of it. There are other small (and not so small) details as well that all add up to giving Lulu something of a Special Snowflake persona. However, Lulu has her moments, and she definitely strives to do what is right and keep pushing forward even when things get tough. I would have liked to see her strengths brought forward a little more, because she definitely has the potential for being a strong, independent heroine.
If I were only rating this book for the story, I would give Timeless 3.5 stars. The writing, however, lost it that extra half star. As an avid reader, and a writer myself, I hold books to high standards. Timeless didn't quite meet the mark.
In general, the writing was pretty clean, though there was an occasional run-on sentence and, in the last half of the book, an increase in occasional spelling errors. The vast number of adverbs, however, could have been exchanged for better descriptions, or even cut in some places. There were also times where the POV slipped briefly but noticeably. These, and other small things, added up to make the book feel not quite ready for publishing. An editor would have caught these mistakes.
Overall, though, I found Timeless a good read, with an endearing cast of fairy tale characters. I would recommend it for children in late elementary school or early middle school who love fantasy, fairy tales, and endings that, if not quite happily ever after, leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling that everything's going to turn out right.
This is a clever fairy tale retelling by a self-published author still in high school. Miss Anthony´s passion for the story and the world she creates shines through on every page and her use of classic fairy tale tropes and characters make this something of a labour of love. Those who love princesses, wolves and castles will love the book, as my young daughter did. Even I, a 43-year-old man, got most of the references (I think!).
Miss Anthony says she prefers to self-publish as she likes to have control over every aspect of her books and that´s a lovely thing to want. However, professional editors and publishers might also help her to better shape and polish her work in the future to best realise her dreams and entertain readers.
I think if Miss Anthony keeps going the way she´s going she´ll be in for some happy endings.
