It was...I mean, it is...then, I was like...Crap, Okay, let me try again. The book was, in my opinion, stunning. Some editing issues but I don't care. Still loved it.
"Mm hmm...I know little girl, I love our bath times too". His words almost made me heave but my body was long used to repressing such a response. He liked to fantasise too. He liked to pretend that I enjoyed what he did, even when he knew it was painful he would make me tell him how much I liked it. If I thought it would get me anywhere I would have told him years ago that it was a waste of his time, I would never enjoy a single thing he did. I had no belief any more that I would be saved by my heroic werewolf mate. If I had one...I do not even think I would recognise him. My emotions so buried and my heart so cold that I doubt it would beat for him. His throat was thick skinned and a couple of feet higher than my elevation. I took a flying leap, the ease with which I gained such height gave me a moment of glory. My paws landed on his heaving chest. My teeth dug in and savaged at the flesh, my head shaking and tearing till sticky redness poured down my coat. My body followed his to the floor, my jaws aching from the death grip they held. I revelled in this new position. I encased his entire throat in a massive muzzle, grinding and pulling and tearing at meat. I got down to bone, his struggles long gone. Blood seemed to soothe the savage beast and my fur melted away on returning to the cabin The Captain of the guard, an Alpha if I ever saw one, had been a man too terrifying to look at. Murder evident in his charcoal stare. I'd met his gaze only once and hadn't had the strength to keep it. I was different girl now though to what I'd been then; some parts soiled and sullied, some parts durable and fortified. The way karma was turning out for me, I'm sure I could expect him real soon. I moaned and sank my hands into Carver's hair, pulling him towards me and begging for more. His lips whispered softly on mine, our breaths mixing in our shared pleasure. "With me, cherry...so close."
warning : sexual / emotional abuse, violence, gore, dark moments....
I absolutely loved this book! It's dark and bloody, but filled with warmth and romance. Arya is nothing when you meet her; she's broken but then you read and see her bloom. It's empowering. All that she battles, and all she overcomes. It's a ride I'm glad I went on. All the characters are either so loveable, or so god damn sexy. Carver.. well.. Carver.. you have to keep reading! Can't wait for more!
I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. I loved the characters, the emotions felt real, the reactions were appropriate for the situations. It was a little choppy to read at times. I found myself going back and rereading a page or two to try and decipher exactly what happened, but beyond that I liked it. I also liked the fact that she stated the next one has a cliff hanger ending so I may just wait till the third one comes out so I can read them together.
This is not of the genre I usually read but definitely a book I'm glad to have read. Ms Lee creates an emotional journey with skilfully descriptive writing and bold, three dimensional characters. From the utter depths of abusive captivity, to the elative heights of sexual awakening, this book has it all. A very dark plot that pulls you in until you can almost feel the wolf's breath on your cheek. An excellent first instalment of what will be your next serial obsession. A must read.
