'Stone in a Sling' is a riveting, true story of Scott Meehan's road to military duty and the, sometimes, miraculous changes that road opened to him.

Join in the incredible journey with this amazing story of Scott's memoirs.

Beginning his young life in Baltimore, Maryland, living in the country surrounded with relatives, he and his brother, Russ, were secure and happy. Through a career change of his father, that contentment was disrupted as he and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois...a big difference. At first the school was a challenge but he quickly made friends with an unlikely group and all seemed good. Then he was transferred to a private school where things became more difficult. After his father completed a few years training there, he was transferred various places in the next five years. By Scott's tenth grade year, the training complete, they were stationed in Columbia where Scott finished his high school years amongst much commotion.

At graduation, in much turmoil, Scott returned to the United States unsettled, restless, and non-productive. He had a life changing experience which led him to enlist in the Army's Special Forces...a choice he came to truly question. From this point on, Scott's life pivoted in one amazing experience to another, but he happily did not have to live his life alone.

This is a story of a man who allowed God into his life and followed the promptings given him. His choices had an impact in others lives and may have a positive impact on your life as well. He lived as he believed Jesus Christ would have him do. Because of this, I feel, he was able to get through the horrors of war reasonably undamaged.

The story never dragged and was very well-written. The title can be confusing but I determined it referred to David & Goliath in the Bible, where a giant was defeated by the faith of a young man and a stone in his sling shot. Therefore, this tittle is a great introduction to Scott's story. The book cover portrays the "meat" of the story very well.

My review of this outstanding book gives it a Five Stars rating.

I found the book to be a coming-of-age book outlining a unique story of one young man's journey well into adulthood. The author develops the story with a series of vignettes that span his life as a youngster in Baltimore, a "missionary kid" in Columbia to the present where he was a retired veteran returning to worn-torn Iraq. The story is filled with emotional and spiritual revelation, as Scott becomes a man in his own way from marriage, college, and through an interesting military career outlining the sacrifices made and the places visited. As a military member from the 80s, I could relate to his journey and the difficulties transient military life brings. Scott focuses in the aspect of particular deeds from a serviceman's standpoint in Iraq that are important for the story.

Gentle, gripping and inspirational is this chronicle of a young man adrift in the world, struggling to find direction. With a loving nudge from his father, Scott decides on a stint in the U. S. Army. Intent on being a Green Beret, he puts all his energy into being the best he can be until he meets Trena. Married and with his first child on the way, Scott changes course. From medic to intelligence to acquisitions, he accepts changes in his (MOS) Military Occupation Specialty. When he leaves the army, he goes to college, takes (ROTC) Reserve Officer's Training Corps, and goes back in as an commissioned officer. Paralleling his heroic military career is his family life and spirituality which molds him into a well rounded success, and far from that struggling young man.

“Stone in a Sling – A Soldier's Journey” by Maj. Scott Meehan (Ret.) is a truly insightful and for this reader very fascinating memoir. It spans the long and varied career of the author in the military, showing the realities of a soldier's life as well as providing interesting information and remarkable insights into many areas of military conflicts and operation. For me, the early chapters on Colombia and Carolina were particularly captivating.
The book has a strong spiritual and religious component that shows the author as a deep and reflective person. Meehan shares some of his personal experiences and thoughts in that area with the readers which raises the book above a mere re-telling of the past and makes for some very special reading.
Recommended for anyone interested in military life and personal growth.
