For a brief, idyllic time Brooke and Morgan shared a rare and tempestuous passion—before his suspicions and angry accusations sent her away. Now she lives in a run-down section of Boston and works in a dingy nightclub, forcing herself to smile seductively at strangers. No one suspects she is married to wealthy, powerful Morgan Kent... and is hiding their son from him...
Then the morning news turns her world upside down—and once again Brooke is captivated by the man she hoped to escape forever...
Bog standard second chance story – except it probably wasn’t so standard in 1982. This H threatens to take custody of his son. This heroine thinks about how she can fight back using the law and her shares in the family business. I think all that was new to categories back then.
Backstory: H/h met and married in six weeks. Heroine was an art historian, hero ran a computer chip firm – so opposites. Heroine couldn’t adjust to the family’s wealthy lifestyle or the hero’s stepsister’s vindictiveness. Hero thought heroine was having an affair with his younger brother, so when she fell pregnant he asked her to get an abortion.
Heroine fled, found a job in a nightclub and was single mom to her son for two years in a seedy neighborhood in Boston. When the news reports that the hero was killed in a plane crash, heroine is shocked and sends flowers to the family.
That’s how the hero finds her – from her credit card info. He shows up at the nightclub the very next day. It was his brother who died, not the hero.
He bullies her back to the family mansion in New Hampshire because his ill father needs to see his grandson after losing his son.
And we all know where this is going – H/h rehash their trust issues. During their separation, hero has realized he was jealous of his brother and it wasn’t rational. Now Step-sis is sorry for her part in feeding the hero’s paranoia. Grampy is happy with the baby.
It’s almost an HEA until the hero thinks the heroine betrayed him by selling her share of stocks in the company so a conglomerate could launch a hostile take-over.
Heroine didn’t do that – the stepsister did. You would think the hero would have known by now. *sigh*
There was plenty of drama, but the emotions were never developed. Heroine was a cold fish. There was way too much talk about shares and the business. I probably would have loved the novelty of this back in 1982, but it’s a trope stronger writers have perfected since then.
The oldest tale on trail. Also a yawn fest. Despite having a second-chance meet and a little child involved the story was extremely noisy. Couldn’t feel any chemistry at all between Morgan and Brooke. Also their kid Andy (sorry) I couldn’t find that he was cute or adorable. I’m sure he was but the writer didn’t portray that. So yes a lot of mess and words and dialogues, but the love remained stagnant.
Brooke is raising Andy by working nights at a club. I had problems with her lofty mothering behaviour having only one child. She’d leave Andy at night with her neighbor - understandable- and even other times it was the neighbor who’d help with looking after Andy. A neighbor who had 2 year old twins and a 6 month old baby would offer Brooke relief from watching Andy and Brooke would accept it/ consider she deserved this break.
This was the beginning of the book and I could just not like Brooke beyond that. Brooke was selfish, detached and argumentative. And she stayed that way for the rest of the book.
I read this before and it still remains a favorite of mine. Like the h and how she struggled to keep her pride and not rely on the H. He was a jerk and didn't believe her but he did love her and I liked how it was resolved. Loved the Grandpa too.
If you love books like Gold Ring of betrayal by Michelle Reid or Shattered trust by Jacquelyn Biard. Then this one is a must read. I loved the theme so much and this book had a difference from the regular HP I read. Morgan is a computer whizz and Millionaire in his own right. He met the heroine in one of his lectures at a University. Brooke was studying Art history, she accidentally took Morgan's classes and fell instantly in love with him. In fact they both did. After a six weeks whirlwind courtship,Brooke and Morgan got married. Their lives were rosy and colourful with love and romance. After returning from their honeymoon, Brooke finds herself bored and overwhelmed with Morgan's father, brother(Andrew) and step sister, Sheila. Not familiar with the life of the rich, Brooke pleaded with Morgan to allow her some domestic duties, she wanted personal space, she wanted more of his time. Morgan failed to understand Brooke discomfort, ignored her and soon tension entered their marriage.Andrew, wasn't ambitious as Morgan In fact he was antithesis of Morgan, he would play hooky and spend his time with Brooke. He filled the loneliness she suffered and soon became fast friends. Sheila was in love with Morgan, she hated Brooke on sight and used her 'sibling' relationship with Morgan to instigate suspicion to Morgan that Brooke and Andrew were having an affair. With building mistrust and animosity, Morgan grew more remote. Brooke turned to Andrew's friendship more and failed to realise Andrew fell in love with her. In one of his drunken escapades, Brooke tried to assist Andrew to his room and both fell into a compromising position. This forces a confession from Andrew shocking Brooke, tipped by Sheila this was how Morgan found them. When Brooke fell pregnant with Morgan's child, he didn't believe it was his and violently demand she have a an abortion, unable to bear the tension and hate, she left him without leaving a trace.
Two years later, Brooke works at a strip joint, she has a lovely son by the name Andy. Life was hard and she was struggling financially keep her home together. They find themselves living in the poorest province of Boston. On one morning, Brooke discovers that Morgan was killed in a plane crash. Not coping well, Brooke finds herself doing the unthinkable. She sends flowers to his family. Her grief being her new companion,Brooke went to work, she kept her self busy and desolate. Tony, her boss, was worried for her and to distract her he asked her to attend a new client. As Brooke approached the new client she is shocked to see Morgan standing before her alive and well. At first she thought she was hallucinating but he certainly correct that. Whisking her away from work he took her back to her apartment. They had some angsty exchange and Morgan still refused to believe Andy is his son. He regrets asking her to abort the baby and was glad she had him, for it was Andrew had died in the plane crash. her dear friend left a legacy for her and she had to return to their house to conclude the Andrew's will execution. Brooke find herself a wealthy woman.
Returning to a house with bad memories and meeting Sheila was certainly difficult. Only to realise Sheila was a changed woman, her father in law was also an ailing one and after losing much hope he has the new will to live. The FIL recognised Morgan in his grandson. Very pleased with Andy's name since Brooke name him after Andrew. One would assume it was resentful but Brooke had her friend to honour. Soon Andy starts treating Morgan like his dad and Morgan couldn't help but fell in love with the boy. Their relationship was building much to Brooke's joy and anxiety. Soon he asks for a second chance and they decided to start over. Brooke was taken to Morgan's wing of the house and realised all her desires were finally met. Morgan changed his place to suit all her needs. The sexual tension was there but she dated not give in. Her hurt wasn't healed properly.
After Morgan's father started to show improvement, so did Brooke and Morgan's relationship. Sheila confessed how Morgan grieved for her when she vanished. A genius didn't know how to live her, what to win her over with when they first met. That's why he worked so hard he wanted to give her everything, he worshipped her. Brooke was so confused she wanted the second chance and the pain was still there. Finally she gave in and resumed her marriage starting back from their honeymoon cabin. They find themselves stranded through a snowstorm and spend the three days making up for the time they lost. Despite Morgan's company was about to be taken over by a Japanese conglomerate he was fighting for Brooke and his family. When they returned home, Morgan was informed that one of his shareholders sold out and his brokers had to stepped in and but it putting more financial strain. Morgan assumed it was Brooke and accused her (Brooke got Andrew's shares). He assumed the second honeymoon tyrst was Brooke 's plan to get him away to sell her shares. Despite her protests he didn't listen. When Morgan finally accepts Andy as his son she is once again accused. Sheila confessed and Morgan realised before her confession he wants his family more than his business. He soon compromised with the conglomerates and he gets more time with his family. They declared their love and found their HEA.
I like the fact that in the beginning she doesn’t suffer from treacherous-body syndrome. She doesn’t just lose her head when he kisses her, like so many other h’s do. She says to him that she first wants to build a relationship with him.
When he gets angry because she doesn’t want to sleep with him (yet) and he complains that she lets him earn it, she answers that he should earn it with trust. You go girl!
Unfortunately near the end of the book she loses her backbone and she does give in too easy.
This is one of the (very) few instances where I was all for the h running away and taking the H's unborn baby with her, because in this case he thought the baby was his brother's!!! And worse, he told her to have an abortion!! So, who can blame Brooke for walking out on her marriage (such as it was) to Morgan, who believed she cheated on him with Andrew, his rebellious younger brother? They had gotten to be close friends because they both gelt like they were on the outside looking in (Andrew felt he couldn't live up to his family's expectations and had a bit of a wild streak, while Brooke felt neglected by Morgan who always put his work first (he headed an electronics company) and had a calming influence on Andrew. She spent more time with him (going sailing, and to museums and art galleries) than with Morgan, whom seemed to have more in common with his coworker, Sheila.
The trouble was, they got married too fast, and didn't spend enough time getting to know each other, learn what was important in their lives. Brooke showed no interest in Morgan's work, and he didn't realize how much her studies in art history meant to her, how much she wanted to work in a museum or gallery. As is often the case, they seemed to have nothing in common but sex.
It takes Andrew's death to bring them back together (though I can't buy it for a minute that, with all his money and connections, it took Morgan two years to find Brooke, who took the old saying "hide in plain sight" seriously), as Morgan's father wants his grandson, and they slowly become a family again. (some of the best moments in the book are when the elderly man and the toddler form a special bond and have some cute moments, like the proud gift of snails and worms from the garden for grandpa, who manages to be appreciative). Both Brooke and Morgan have to learn tom forgive and forget, understand each other and take an interest in things that are important to the other.
Not a bad story!

The h is really a doormat who despite the H accusing her of cheating with his brother, asking her to abort her child and accusing her of selling the shares in his company keeps forgiving him and coming back for more.
why the OW never got wht she deserved? to be that cruel to break up her stepbro marriage and then after 2 years meeting w/the h again, the h forgive her ? na'a... not in this world. screw you
