Into the Darkness is a workbook developed for victims of trauma and sexual abuse. A large number of survivors have a difficult time discussing their situation due to shame, confusion or any number of emotions, but it is these conversations with oneself and/or others are vital to the healing process and to move past trauma. The anecdote of Ana’s battle through the forest and her self-discovery in the light provides metaphors for the reader to use to engage in these difficult conversations and move forward in the process of healing. These metaphors are put to use through a series of questions found within the pages of the book that encourage self-reflection and community. It is recommended that the reader complete this with a therapist or in a supportive group. Learn more at IntoTheDarknessBook.com
“These scars… these scars are haunting. They are tormenting me with memories of the dark I will never forget. I ran for so long, and fought so hard. And I didn’t care about the people I left behind. I didn’t care for myself. I was numb, and now I feel again without knowing how to. And I hurt so much. It all hurts so much and I can barely stand it.”
The line that stuck out to me the most in this paragraph was, “I was numb, and now I feel again without knowing how to.” Going through a traumatic experience can leave you feeling like you’re in a foreign world without the capabilities you’ve always had. Obstacles you could normally overcome become enormous behemoths, and you’re left alone, on your own, seemingly without any tools or support.
This book is a tool for your toolbox in overcoming your personal traumatic experience and helps to get your thoughts and feelings on paper. Too often do we drown in the thoughts swirling in our brain, and to be able to get them out and on paper starts the process of organizing and recognizing these thoughts.
What it is about putting your thoughts on paper that allows you to clear your mind is above my pay grade, but from my own personal experience there is next to nothing that is more helpful.
The short story provided in this book allows you to potentially align your own experiences and thoughts, and begin the process of writing them down in the second portion of the book.
What I like most about this book is it isn’t a massive undertaking of reading 400+ pages to get to what it’s trying to say. This book truly focuses on the reader and puts the reader first. It helps to unlock the mind of the reader and allow them to immediately get their thoughts flowing.
If you’re looking for a way to begin answering questions that continue to plague you, I would highly recommend grabbing a copy.
