Re Journey Back To Love - Rachel Elliot's little toe dip into HPlandia with two contributions starts here. She sticks to the tropiest of the tropiest with an actor H who is out for revenge on the hapless investigative reporter h after they had a brief affair five years earlier and she failed to mention her job.

This one starts with the h running late for work and the cab driver who is waiting for her isn't too happy about it, until she actually gets into the cab and turns on the charm. The h is a nice lady with a knack for digging out corruption. RE lets us know that the h has those mysterious ways that make people just want to tell her whatever she wants to know.

The h carries a seekrit sorrow tho, when she was just a cub reporter her editor sent her to the remote but almost tropical isle of Arran which is located in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. The h was abashed at being sent to such a backwater, but her editor said if she was a real reporter, she could find some news anywhere.

The h is wandering around, enjoying the tropicalness of it all, when she eavesdrops on two Isle ladies talking about the big Hollywood actor that is hiding in their midst. The h scents a story, so it is off to find the illusive actor she goes. She manages to find out he is staying in a holiday cottage, and her sweet ways convince the holiday cottage owner to set her up in a cottage next to the actor.

The h then manages to run into him and sets about making friends - the actor takes one look at her honey haired, curvy self and sets about seduction - tho he doesn't use his actor name, he obfuscates and uses his real one. The H pushes hard for a more physical union and the h, abandoning all thought of getting a scoop in the immediacy of her big lust implosion, falls headlong into an affair, her very first ever. Then the H finds her press card after a few weeks of lurvin in the almost tropical sun and he is enraged and cruel and dumps her faster than heated coals.

The h is heartbroken, but continues on in her chosen career and never writes anything about the H. She knew he must have had some bad press experiences and she loved him enough to grant him privacy and not make a splash with an elusive but unethical interview. She makes it on her own anyways, tho her new editor is a bit of a witch and they have a running office battle going on. Mainly cause the new editor is also a bit unethical and published another reporter's almost libel gossip under the h's byline and the h did not approve, nor did the editors bosses.

The h makes it to work and the editor from Hades announces that she will be doing an exclusive interview with - you guessed it - her former lover from five years ago. It is made clear the h will lose her job if she doesn't get the story and the actor himself has requested her. The h arrives at the H's hotel and he is all over her like flies on tacky paper. Then he tells her he just knew she was a total tart selling her body for a story. The h is hurt, because she is still in that lustlurve with the H and just couldn't resist his roofie kisses. She wants to back out of the interview, asking him if he has had enough of humiliating and berating her yet.

Obviously he hasn't, cause he threatens to ruin her career too, by complaining to all and sundry if she doesn't follow him and do the interview. He doesn't say where she is to follow him to, but she know she will be trekking back to Arran. She shows up a few days later, the holiday cottage owner is there and eager to pimp the h out to the H, but he is also happy to see her again.

Then we get the roofie kiss moment, humiliate the h moment, argument between the H and h moment and wash, rinse, repeat. The h is just trying to get enough background on the H to write a profile and we are supposed to know how wonderful the H is when it comes out that his big grudge against reporters comes from having another reporter make up stories about the H being a big Vietnam war hero when the H first became famous. The H is angry that the reporter made up such lies cause he felt it belittled all the other soldiers over there who got no recognition at all.

(This is obviously meant as a redemption attempt by RE on the H's character. I think I would have preferred she show he was decent person by laying off harassing and belittling the h - who by this point has tried to apologize multiple times and the H just keeps insulting her before the roofie kisses start. Since the H is basically a Montana ranch guy and went to Vietnam and got mentally messed up and then couldn't settle on his ranch and then ran off to New York where he messed up more until he got discovered as the latest Hollywood box office hit, his insults came off as mean and unjust and very hurtful to the h. Maybe if he had been a Greek tycoon he could have done them with a better accent and it wouldn't have been so demeaning to the h.)

Anyways, the h finally gets enough for the article and wants to leave. The H demands that she cook him dinner and we can see that he is going to do the vengeful pump and dump to really rub his Epic Wrath in deep. Except he can't stop the insulting Western drawl or the comments that the h is the Jezebel of London News and the h has finally had enough.

She kicks him out of her cottage after one last futile attempt to explain and then gets drunk on brandy and champagne. She falls asleep with the oven on and wakes up when the cottage is filled with smoke from the steak and potatoes she failed to remove. The H busts into her cottage, throws her up against a wall to get to the fire and after it is out, hauls her back to his own cottage and dumps her into his bed. The doctor comes to check her over and besides a possible concussion from the H throwing her against a wall and her still being a bit drunk, the h is fine and passes out.

Our friendly Arran holiday cottage owner pimp comes over to check on his guests and gives the H a bunch of the h's back magazine articles. The H finds out that while he was making movies, getting rich and getting a leg over every female that offered, the h was trying to make the world a better place through her investigative reporting. This shames the H into admitting he loves her,but he keeps that hot news item to himself.

After a very long h confession where the h looks a bit pathetic in her humble attempts to explain, and during which the H lets her go on, cause he is sadistically enjoying the protracted h grovel, the H sweeps her off to bed for multiple sessions of boudoir bouncing and wall banging in a vertical way. Then he tells the h she can just dump her life in England and go to Hollywood with him. But the h has doubts, so he tosses in that he loves her and that is why he was so keen on vengeance, cause his little heart and big ego were totally shattered by her failure to confess her reporterness. But now he is keeping her until he meets a Pollyanna he likes better and so they commence with the bouncing for the big HEA.

To be fair the H's big lurve confession was fairly well done, if I had taken another round with the Captain, I totally would have bought it. The h tolerates a lot, but she does eventually use her backbone a few times and tells the H off. I am not sure I believed in the love by the end, but the reconciliation part was well done.

My only big qualm is that this H is a cowboy narcissist, and seems to be quite willing to hit out when his ego has been a teensy bruised and he has a HUGE fragile ego. It isn't remarked upon that he lied about who he was five years earlier too, nor does the fact that he threw her pretty hard into the wall get the consideration I thought it deserved. I feared this H was big entitled manipulator, he expects the h to give up her entire life for a man who invested considerable time in humiliating her and I wasn't sure he wasn't still planning on dragging her to Hollywood only to dump her for the latest pop tart after a while to soothe his still smarting pride.

This one is an okay, but absolutely standard HP read. All the proper tropes and conventions and HPlandia rules are followed to a T, right down to the h being on ice while the H gorges at the lurvely lady buffet. RE does do a good 'let's get together and lurve it up H speech,' and the h does manage to display a spine once or twice, so overall this one isn't a keeper but it is an okay trip for a quick HPlandia read.

So awful -- I agree with boogenhagen's assessment that the H gets off on this behavior and all the hoops he makes the h jump through. He's a textbook narcissist and the title of the textbook is "A Lifetime of Uncertainty and Misery, 101."

The couple: Slade/Ross and Leigh

Romance genre: second chance romance
Length: 187 pages

Plot: Leigh is a reporter who has been ordered to interview a popular actor, Slade (also known by his birth name of Ross). In fact, he made it clear that he would only grant the interview to her. The reason is that he is looking for some sort of revenge: years ago, they had a fling but he discovered that she was trying to write a story about him. He stomped out and never gave her a chance to explain, but he's back to force her to spend some time with him so that he can continue to stop her from trying to explain. But maybe, just maybe some interference in the form of an old friend, some back issues of her magazine, and good ol' fore can shake things up a little bit.

Commentary: I found this book in a coworker's classroom library - I think it was there by accident, lol - too many nipples for high school reading. Anyways, it was the story of an actor who was also very self-absorbed and who believed that everyone and everything revolved around him. That's pretty stereotypical. I did feel a little sorry for Leigh - she was going to do something scummy then changed her mind but couldn't get Slade to believe her. Mostly because he wouldn't ever let anyone else talk. Like all Harlequins, this one is only resolved in the last couple of pages. Slade/Ross was convinced to finally give Leigh another chance because . So he's a keeper!
I think the issue here is simply that the story didn't age well. It was a typical '80s Harlequin, complete with a hero who says things like (paraphrase) "Your body is telling me yes, but I'll wait, but not for long because I know you want it." And the hero is such a caricature of an American actor - obviously, he's a cowboy, I mean what else could an American be? This book was definitely a relic of its time.

Did he remember the past they'd shared?

When movie star Slade Keller requested a rare interview with the London magazine She Speaks, he asked specifically for staff writer Leigh Daniels. Leigh didn't relish the assignment.

Five years ago on Scotland's island of Arran, Leigh had met and befriended Slade, intending to write an exclusive story about him later. She hadn't counted on falling in love with the man. Nor on his reaction to her deception and invasion of his privacy.

Now, just recalling the ecstasy of their love made her only too vulnerable—and willing

It wasn't that bad of a story. I was actually quite impressed with most of it. Two old lovers coming back together hating each other, but hate is so akin to love...

An OK little romance - the relationship wasn't quite as equal as I would've liked it, but it was cute enough.
