How can you be an animal (which you are) and sit there tapping away on your laptop about your childhood, or your grandfather, or your family connection to Queen Victoria and think that you are really writing about your past when you are missing a solid 670 million years of your real past. Please, please read this book by A.S. Romer if only to be presented with the most perfectly concise and thoughtful take on the branching of adaptations from fish to amphibian to reptile to mammal to, ok then, Queen Victoria and Old Man Whillikers or whoever made time with your great-grandmother. I will know if you have read this cause then you will walk around with your fingers tucked just under your ear touching the jaw joint and opening and closing your mouth bemusedly saying to yourself "that is so amazing, so part of my own jaw articulation that I can feel moving right here under my finger is an anatomical remnant of the transition about 90 million years ago from reptile to mammal and it is still in my body and I really truly am a descendant of all the reptiles! Neat-o! Hey, guys, look at my jaw joint, its like HERE COMES GODZILLA, and oh my god, you guys all have the same thing and are all reptile descendants too with synapsid skulls, no flippin way!!! this is great let's all go to Dairy Queen together cause its like we have a club now, the reptile to mammal club, the RepMams!"
