Three and a half stars. This is an intelligently written book which allows the reader to understand the lasting significance of Defoe's achievements as a statesman, writer and man of principle. Each chapter focused on a different aspect of Defoe's life, which allowed me to skip over topics which did not interest me, but also meant I was less emotionally engaged with Defoe's life story.
