I've only recently discovered Maggie Kingsley's books, even though her 24 romances were published between 1996 and 2012. I've become a compulsive reader since I retired; haven't read as many books since I was at school.

A Question of Trust is surprisingly good for a first novel and Ms Kingsley certainly isn't afraid to tackle difficult subjects.

Bridie McEwen grew up and attended medical school in Edinburgh. For the past five years she has happily worked in a general practice in Struan, a Perthshire (Scotland) village. She's buried herself in the Highlands to escape childhood trauma. The other partner in the practice is Andrew Weston, an elderly widower. He has arranged for a locum to fill his position while he goes on a three week fishing holiday. The English locum, Jack Culrain, disturbs Bridie. He's TD&H, asks a lot of questions and is attracted to her.

Jack also had an unhappy childhood. His parents grew to hate each other but stayed together for financial reasons. He doesn't believe in love as his parents used it as a bargaining chip. He's footloose and has worked all over the world, never for more than two years in the same place. He can't understand how Andrew has spent thirty years in the one village. Then Andrew is badly injured in a car smash and decides to retire.

Maggie Kingsley knows Highland village life, the good and the bad. She writes well, particularly dialogue. Bridie is stitched-up but understandably so. One thing I have a problem with is Jack's patronising pet name for her, 'Little One'. She's 29 and 5'8"!
