Vetala Panchavimshati or Betal Panchabinsati is a collection of tales and legends within a frame story, from India. It was originally written in Sanskrit.One of its oldest recensions is found in the 12th Book of the Kathasaritsagara ("Ocean of the Streams of Story"), a work in Sanskrit compiled in the 11th century by Somadeva, but based on yet older materials, now lost. This recension comprises in fact twenty-four tales, the frame narrative itself being the twenty-fifth. The Vetala stories are popular in India .

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (Bengali: ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর Ishshor Chôndro Biddashagor 26 September 1820 – 29 July 1891), born Ishwar Chandra Bandopadhyay (Bengali: ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, Ishshor Chôndro Bôndopaddhae), was an Indian Bengali polymath and a key figure of the Bengal Renaissance. Vidyasagar was a philosopher, academic, educator, writer, translator, printer, publisher, entrepreneur, reformer, and philanthropist. His efforts to simplify and modernize Bengali prose were significant. He also rationalized and simplified the Bengali alphabet and type, which had remained unchanged since Charles Wilkins and Panchanan Karmakar had cut the first (wooden) Bengali type in 1780. He received the title "Vidyasagar" ("Ocean of learning" or "Ocean of knowledge") from the Calcutta Sanskrit College (where he graduated), due to his excellent performance in Sanskrit studies and philosophy. In Sanskrit, Vidya means knowledge or learning and Sagar means ocean or sea. This title was mainly given for his vast knowledge in all subjects which was compared to the vastness of the ocean

বেতাল অর্থ মৃতদেহাশ্রয়ী প্রেত। প্রাচীন ভারতে পৈশাচী প্রাকৃত ভাষায় রচিত মহাকবি গুণাঢ্যের "বৃহৎ কথা" থেকে পরবর্তীতে একদশ শতাব্দীতে কবি সোমদেব ভট্ট সংস্কৃত ভাষায় অনুবাদ করেন "কথাসরিৎসাগর"। আর এই কথাসরিৎসাগরের এক ক্ষুদ্রাংশ "বেতাল পঞ্চবিংশতি"। কথাসরিৎসাগর মূলতঃ রাজা উদয়ন আর তার পুত্র নরবাহনদত্তকে ঘিরে রচিত হয়েছিল। রাজা বিক্রমাদিত্যকে ঘিরে যে অংশখানি সেটাই বেতাল পঞ্চবিংশতি। ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর হিন্দী "বৈতালপচীসী" অবলম্বন করে গ্রন্থখানি রচনা করেন।

রাজা বিক্রমাদিত্যকে শান্তশীল নামের এক সন্ন্যাসী প্রতিদিন বেলের মত দেখতে একটি ফল দেন আর আশীর্বাদ করে চলে যান। রাজা কিন্তু ফলগুলো খান না, রেখে দেন। একদিন অসাবধানতাবশত একটি ফল হাত থেকে পড়ে গেলে ভেঙ্গে ভেতর থেকে বের হয়ে আসে মহামূল্যবান রত্ন। অবাক রাজা সবগুলো ফল ভেঙ্গে দেখেন যে প্রতিটা ফলই রত্নে পরিপূর্ণ। পরদিন সন্ন্যাসী আসলে রাজা এর কারণ জানতে চাইলে সন্ন্যাসী বলেন শুধুমাত্র রাজার দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করার জন্য তার এই কাজ। সন্ন্যাসী বলেন তিনি মন্ত্রের দ্বারা অষ্টসিদ্ধি করবেন, ভাদ্রকৃষ্ণচতুর্দশীর সন্ধ্যায় রাজা যদি একা গোদাবরীতীরবর্তী শশ্মানে আসেন তবেই তা সম্ভব। বিক্রমাদিত্যের কৌতূহল হয়, তিনি সম্মত হন। আর সেই ভাদ্রকৃষ্ণচতুর্দশীর ডাকিনী, শঙ্খিনী পরিবেষ্টিত ভরসন্ধ্যায় বেরিয়ে পড়েন তরবারী বাগিয়ে। তারপর কী হলো পাঠক তা পড়েই জেনে নিন না কেন!

Born on 26 September 1820, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was an Indian educator and social reformer of the nineteenth century. Vidyasagar's Collected Essays intricately builds the efforts to simplify and modernize Bengali prose. It is his ideas, simple and clear that rationalised and simplified the Bengali alphabet and type. He made reading easy, understandable and enriching. Nonetheless, the matter is of huge relevance to which he is referred as the "Father of Bengali prose".

The collection of essays is a must read for all. Enlighten yourself with his simple writing style with matters of greater significance.

দশ বছর বয়সে প্রথমবার পড়ে অধিকাংশ গল্পের অর্থ বুঝি নাই, রাজার পিঠে বেতালের বার বার আরোহণ ছাড়া আর কিছু মনে ছিলো না। অনেকদিন ধরেই ভাবছিলাম এই বইটা রিভিশন দিবো, কেন জানি না ধারণা হয়েছিলো ২৫টা গল্পে বুদ্ধির পরিচয় দিতে হবে, ধাঁধার মতো। এখন আবার পড়ে হতাশ হলাম।

২৫ টা গল্পের কুড়িটাই সতীত্ব, পতিত্ব, পরকীয়া, সহমরণ, ইত্যাদি ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের সামাজিক আচার সংক্রান্ত। এ কারণেই ছোট থাকতে বুঝিওনি, মনেও ছিলো না গল্পের বিষয়। একমাত্র ২৩ নম্বর ভোজনবিলাসী ও শয্যাবিলাসীর গল্প কিছুটা ইন্টারেস্টিং।

সময়ের বিশাল অপচয় হলো বলবো। শুধুমাত্র বাংলাভাষার বৈচিত্র্য ঝালাই হলো কিছুটা, একই শব্দের যে বাংলায় অনেক রূপ, অনেক প্রতিশব্দ আছে, তা স্কুল লেভেলের পরে সেভাবে পড়া হয়নি। তাও অর্ধেক বই পড়ার পরে আর মন দিয়ে লাইন বাই লাইন না পড়ে, স্কিপ করে গেলাম। বাংলা ঝালাইয়ের জন্যে ২ দিলাম, নাহলে এটা এখন ০ রেটিং বই হবে।
