Es ist schön, einmal etwas über die Relativitätstheorie auf Deutsch zu lesen. Die Erklärung ist mit vielen Diagrammen einfach gehalten und auch für jemanden mit genauem Hintergrundwissen ziemlich verständlich. Ich werde das Buch auf jeden Fall wieder lesen, um bestimmte Teile zu wiederholen.

The cartoons in this book made some very difficult concepts easy to understand. My memory of this book helped me when I was studying physics in college. I wish there were more picture books of science like this

This is meant to be a simple introduction to Einstein’s theory of relativity. I wonder if it really serves that purpose and would be useful to anyone other than someone who has a general understanding of physics. The author tries to dumb the topic down by introducing many diagrams and scenarios, but I suspect it would still fly over most people’s heads.

The truth is that only students of physics would be mostly interested in this kind of book. And so it has to start with accepting a basic level of understanding and then attempt to explain the concepts. But there the book fails because instead of explaining “why”, it tries to explain “what”. For example, it jumps from the Michelson-Morley experiment to the Special Theory of Relativity and arrives at the statement that the speed of light is a constant. But it never quite explains it properly. Such a jump would be okay for a seasoned physicist, but it would mystify an amateur who cannot understand the logical reasoning behind this.

In general, books that seek to make it simpler for readers are neither simple nor useful. And this book is no exception.
