Ermegherd. I am entirely addicted. If there ever was a less likeable antihero, Harry Hole is him. He's an alcoholic, self-abusing jerk... and every time he picks up a bottle, Nesbo makes you say, "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Because you STILL CARE ABOUT HARRY. ARGH! He has SO FEW HUMAN BEING SKILLS, but dangit, he's a good detective. He's the kind of person who you'd want to come to dinner, but not to live next door, not least because you'd be at risk of bullet holes and fire.
The bad guys can be a little one-dimensional early in the series, but all of the characters deepen as Nesbo's skills grow, and it's a real pleasure to watch a writer get better and better with each book. Just don't expect Harry's good times to last long without a relapse.
I am such a Jo Nesbo fan and haven’t read one of his books for a while. The Bat was just a spellbinding holiday read with all the mysteries, intrigue and bits of general facts thrown in that does it for me. The way the spider web of relatedness is weaved is incredible and clever. It brings out the detective in me. I am thinking... what did Birgitta want Harry to see when she said “look, look closely”.? Or something to that effect).
