A fling in Cancun turns sour for Laney. Can margaritas taste sweet again?
Laney Delaney, a wedding dress designer, thought her fling with Andy in Cancun was more than that—until he admitted he had a fiancée. Brokenhearted, Laney returns to L.A. and deals with the demands of temperamental brides while trying to forget Andy… even though every sip of margarita reminds her of him.
Until she meets Kyle, who has just what it takes to heal her wounded heart. But when Kyle's marriage proposal never turns into an actual wedding, and he spends more and more time at the office, Laney's happiness sours.
Between a surprise encounter with Andy and an even worse surprise on her kitchen counter, what's a girl to do?
This fun and flirty novella by Charlene Ross, a breakout voice in chick lit, is a must-read!
Cheers! Keep tabs on the Happy Hour RomCom - Book 1: Another Shot at Love - Book 2: Love on the Rocks (with Salt) - Book 3: Tequila Slammer
What was your inspiration to write the Happy Hour RomCom series? In a writing class, the teacher had us pull an adjective and a verb from a hat. I got frosted and cowboy. "What the heck am I going to do with that?" I thought, so I just wrote, "'I'll have a Frosted Cowboy,' I said to the bartender." I wrote two pages and turned it in; my teacher loved it and wanted more. So I developed it into the story of a woman whose Plan A didn't work out when she had never even considered a Plan B. At the time, my own Plan A was failing, and I had never really considered a Plan B. My story is nothing like Laney's, but I wanted to see where her story would go. As you’ll see in the book, the Frosted Cowboy cocktail plays a part in Laney’s story—and I even include the recipe for it at the end!
It seems your books could fit into several genres. How would you categorize them? Laney Delaney is a lovable heroine who finds herself in ridiculous dating and work situations, so I'd categorize them as chick lit or romcoms. There's light-hearted romance and of course some sex, but I wouldn't say they're sexy romance novels; more romantic comedies. Anyone looking for love or who could use a laugh will enjoy this series!
How is Laney's story different from other chick lit? Wait, are you saying a chick lit heroine who catches her fiancé cheating on her and then loses her job and has to start over again isn't original?! I'm kidding of course. What sets Laney apart is she's sassy, yet not cool. I liked the idea of a fashion designer who was talented and creative, but not very fashionable. She's a fish out of water, but doesn't know how to jump in the pool, or even if she wants to. In business and in love, she's searching for her true passion and struggles to reconcile what she thinks she needs with what she thinks she wants.
Do you have any more books planned? Yes. I don't want to say too much because I'm a bit superstitious, but I'm in the early stages of writing a book intersecting present-day lives of people who share a past. There might be a love triangle. And a little sex. And hopefully a lot of laughter.
Charlene Ross, a Los Angeles suburbanite, is co-author of The Making of a Picky Eater and has been featured in Skirt! Magazine and on NPR’s This I Believe series. Before life in the suburbs she backpacked through eighteen European countries, lived in London, worked in the music industry, and became engaged on stage at a U2 concert in Verona, Italy. (Bono even kissed her!) Now she drives carpool, embarrasses her children by dancing “in the pit” at free cover band concerts, and works hard at keeping the spark of her 20-year marriage alive.
Review rating: 4 Margarita Stars, with a slice of lemon!
Thank you to the author, Charlene Ross, for proving me with a copy of Love on the Rocks (with Salt) in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"Always the bridesmaid but never the bride…"
Laney finds love in the arms of Hunky Andy one summer in Cancun. On their last day, Andy tells her that he’s engaged to be married, as soon as his fiancé finishes her MBA…heartbroken she returns home.
A year later she meets Kyle. The perfect man. There’s nothing he won’t do for her. And then her world comes crashing down when she sees Andy with his fiance at Gabrielle’s, where she works as a wedding dress designer.
The plot thickens and there are yet a few more surprises in store for Sweet Laney!
Love the cover & title, well-developed characters. Great story line!
Don’t miss out on the second installment of Love on The Rocks (with Salt): Frosted Cowboy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would recommend this for all romance readers!
I received a free copy for an honest review. My only criticism was that I wished it was a longer book. The storyline was very interesting and at times really funny with Laney's witticism. I liked the fact that she didn't let her bad experiences with Andy or Kyle sour her towards looking for her true love. The scene with Kyle towards the end was an unexpected twist but totally relatable. I enjoyed this book very much.
Charlene Ross's novella is an ideal escape: Hollywood setting, cocktails, wedding gowns, a taste of backstory to lead into Frosted Cowboy (next on my reading list!). Love on the Rocks is a smooth-with-a-touch-of-tart, frothy happy hour that sets up heroine Lainey Delaney's conflicts perfectly.
Love on the Rocks (with Salt) is the prequel to Charlene Ross' first full length book The Frosted Cowboy. As a very short prequel, it gives a great indication to the author's writing style and her sense of humour which I really enjoyed.
However as its a relatively short story, I found that although I was liking what I was reading, it really didn't give me chance really get to know the characters at all. It was more snapshots of what has been happening in Laney Delaney's disastrous love life.
Love on the Rocks (with Salt) is an amusing romantic comedy, that will make you smile and is a lovely way to while a away an hour.
I would recommend reading this if you are interested in trying out the Charlene Ross as an author, and if you are potentially interested in the next book in the series, which should be a much fuller story. As it is this felt like lots of short anecdotes as various points of Laney's life bringing you up to the present day.
Thank you to Charlene Ross for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
Love on the Rocks (with Salt) is not your typical chick-lit. Author Charlene Ross consistently delivers characters who are fresh and well-developed, plot twists that surprise, and laughs alongside heart. The novella is engaging and made me want to find out more about Laney Delaney and her future. As a prequel, it answers some questions about what might motivate the characters in Frosted Cowboy.
An awesome prequel that stands strong on its own! I had read Frosted Cowboy first and loved it, and so it was fun to go back and see what happened to Laney before she got to that point. Laney is funny and charming and says everything you wish you thought quickly enough to say in real life. If you like romantic comedies, you'll love this book!
