Pico, the Pesky Parrot - Pico, El Loro Latoso

Sarah, Emma’s mom, promised to bird-sit Pico for two weeks but soon regrets her decision because the noisy parrot keeps screeching and squawking all day, annoying her family and the neighbors. When Pico makes a mess of Emma’s room, Emma gets very angry, but her friends help her. Charlotte notices that Pico seems sad, and Pedro finds out why Pico is shrieking so loudly all the time. The parrot is frustrated because nobody pays attention to him, and nobody understands what he wants. The purpose of this English and Spanish bilingual book is to show children the beauty of another language, and that learning a new language doesn’t have to be boring, it could be fun. The story also delivers a message that when we don’t take the time to listen to each other, we tend to judge others quickly before we get to know them.

“The writing bug bit me on a rainy afternoon when I couldn’t find any new book to read. My daughter had enough of my moping around and snapped at me, “Mom, stop whining! If you haven’t a book to read, then write one.” Her challenge shocked me, but I started playing with the idea and I’ve been writing stories, that I like to read, ever since.”

Erika loves to dance to her own tunes and follow her dreams, introduces her story writing skills and her books that are based on creative imagination with themes such as alternate history, urban fantasy, cozy mystery, sweet romance and supernatural stories. Her children’s stories are informative, educational, and deliver moral values in a non-preachy way.

“I followed my dream to become a writer. As an artist, I paint pretty pictures with my brushes, and as a writer, I paint vivid pictures with my words.”

Enjoy the Antics and Learn Words in a New Language Along the Way!
As a former ESL teacher, I was impressed by author Erika M Scazo’s bilingual story about a pesky parrot and wondered why books like this one (written in both English and Spanish at many reading levels and interest ranges) were not available when I was teaching. As Pico screeches and annoys the neighborhood in his usual way when his owner is on vacation, the family who is parrot sitting finally learns what the pesky parrot’s constant squawking has been all about. Along the way, readers will have fun as they learn to speak and understand familiar words spoken and written in a foreign language. Lessons about cultural diversity and its value combine for a perfect surprise ending. Whether used in the classroom or home as a learning resource or simply read as a story about neighbors, family and community, readers are sure to enjoy the antics of Pico, the Pesky Parrot and learn words in a new language along the way. ~ Bette A. Pico the Pesky Parrot is an adorable story that teaches a strong message of compassion, community, and communication. Molly adopts her neighbor's parrot after Mrs. Santos must move a nursing home. All day long, Pico, shrieks, but Molly doesn't understand him. Then Molly is invited to go on vacation and she must make arrangements for Pico. A new family to the neighborhood agrees to take care of Pico, putting their daughter, Emma in charge of the bird. One day Emma and her friends discover Pico speaks Spanish and decide to surprise Molly by teaching him English. When Molly returns from her trip, she's overjoyed to hear Pico speaking English. I love that this book conveys so many positive messages for children and their families. The illustrations are beautiful and it is printed in English and Spanish on alternate pages giving the reader the option to read in either language. As a bilingual teacher, I am excited about sharing the book with my students and feel it would be a wonderful addition to all school libraries. 5 stars for Pico the Bilingual Parrot!
