This is really one of the most harrowing and impressive tales of real-life courage and commitment imaginable. Mellnik's experiences are recounted with as much "just-the-fact-ma'am" possible, but even without much interior monologue, or because of it, this gives a grim picture of the conditions of war against the Japanese in the Philippines between 1941 -45.
