"...these gifts are not toys for us to play with on public platforms: they are tools for building God's kingdom." (James Goll, Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today, Page 77)
I bought the whole package of these materials by this author. It includes a book, study guide and two CDs. The material focuses on the following 9 gifts of the Spirit that are mentioned in the Bible:
REVELATORY GIFTS
(1) The Gift of Discerning of spirits
(2) The Gift of the Word of Wisdom
(3) The Gift of the Word of Knowledge
POWER GIFTS
(1) The Gift of Faith
(2) The Gift of Healings
(3) The Gift of Miracles
VOCAL GIFTS
(1) The Gift of Various Kinds of Tongues
(2) The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues
(3) The Gift of Prophecy
I was bit disappointed that the author focused on these gifts again, rather than explore other gifts of the Holy Spirit. These 9 Gifts have been taught on in many books and some authors have even dictated that this list is the complete list of the gifts of the Spirit. Of course this is a lie, there are many more gifts of the Spirit listed in the Bible. The author does acknowledge this in his book and even lists a more comprehensive list of the gifts of the Spirit. Unfortunately, does not teach on these other gifts; however choose to focus on the more familiar and well-written about 9 gifts of the Spirit. I think this does the Body of Christ a great disservice because what we need is someone not to teach on these gifts again, but on the other gifts and expand on them. That is my opinion. Again, perhaps, the Holy Spirit wants to keep reemphasizing the same 9 gifts of the Spirit yet again in another book. I won't argue with the Holy Spirit.
The companion study guide is almost verbatim of the book; however, has some more definitions from some other authors on the gifts of the Spirit and has a quiz after the teaching in the study guide with a answer key, so you can check your answers. There is also a passage of scripture to memorize and write down after every lesson.
Body of Christ it is time to start exercising the gifts of the Spirit. Now is the time. Use this resource and other resources to find what your spiritual gift(s) is and make an impact on the world by the demonstration of the Gospel not in word only, but with power.

"Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today" written by author James W. Goll is a Pentecostal & Charismatic/Religion book. Published by Whitaker House this paperback is 189 pages long. The front cover has the title and opened hands that are filled with light.
Author Goll has divided his book into four parts after acknowledgments, foreword and preface. Each section has three chapters. After the twelve chapter there is a closing, notes, resource material, and information about the author. The first section is "Introduction to Spiritual Gifts" and reviews what they are, how the Holy Spirit Moves, and how to grow in exercising these gifts. He broaches subjects such as why God gives spiritual gifts, the gift of prophecy, how to respond and avoiding negative responses to the Holy Spirit, and building faith. These chapters are heavily soaked with scripture. The last three section deal with three gifts each.
In the next section is"Revelatory Gifts - Gifts that Reveal" are three chapters on discerning the spirit, wisdom, and knowledge. Part three looks at "Gifts that Do" such as faith, healing, and working miracles. The final section is on "Gifts that Speak" which are speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy. Using scripture, testimonies, and personal stories author Goll elaborates on each of the nine gifts.
There are more than nine gifts. In the first chapter of his book, the author lists "A Multiplicity of Gifts". He has twenty five listed with biblical references by each one. Explanation that he chose to focus on the particular nine in his book cites I Corinthians chapter 12. I enjoyed the chapter on prophecy because a friend and I have been discussing that lately. It is the chapter twelve and extremely interesting.
This is a very well written, organized book. The author has researched it well. His writing style makes the subject interesting and easy to understand. The way the book was divided into four sections helped tremendously. The information is presented in such a way that the book was hard to put down. I wanted to keep reading it and learn more.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in spiritual gifts, prophecy, or charismatic and Pentecostal books. If you are interested in finding your spiritual gift this book will help. Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today is written by James W. Goll. This book explains to us spiritual gifts and explains how the Holy Spirit moves through them. Spiritual gifts are tools that you need to practice using. They are given by God for ministry to take place for the good of the Body of Christ. They are given though us as acts of kindness, mercy and love towards others and we are to give them as God shows us to.
Spiritual gifts are broken up into 3 types. Revelatory Gifts are the gifts that reveal, gifts of discerning of Spirits, word of wisdom and word of knowledge. Power Gifts are the gifts that do, gifts of faith, healing and miracles. Vocal Gifts are the gifts that speak, Gift of various kinds of tongues, gift of interpretation of tongues, and the gift of prophecy.
The gifts that were interesting to me were the gift of knowledge, the gift of miracles and the gift of prophecy.. The gift of knowledge is explained as having a “gut” feeling about something. You know you know something but you do not know how you know it. The book explains that no one knows everything, only God does. The gift of miracles is something I have witnessed. Miracles are a gift, you do not earn them, and they are only given by God. You will almost always find that a miracle was sparked by an act of obedience. The gift of prophecy does not predict the future as one might think. It is a word of encouragement that is personalized and aligned with scripture. It is meant to build up a person's faith, encourage them to do good deeds and to comfort them. Page 168 in the book has a scriptural test to confirm is the prophecy is a gift of the spirit.
This book is very interesting. I appreciate the author explaining the proper times to use spiritual gifts and the reason for them. This book is very helpful in understanding Spiritual Gifts and is an encouragement to take the step to pray for a Spiritual Gift.

In this book, the author clearly explains the Gifts, which are given freely by God to believers. The book is filled with an abundance of examples of not only how the gifts were used in Biblical times, but are still valid and in use in our modern, contemporary world.
Starting with a Introduction to Spiritual Gifts – what they are, how the Holy Spirit moves and how to grow in exercising spiritual gifts – the author the explores all of the gifts of the Spirit broken into three categories – The Revelatory Gifts, The Power Gifts and The Vocal Gifts.
This is not a book to be read only once. This is a book that should be studied by believers to aid in uncovering and developing the Gifts bestowed on them in order to learn what they are and, as the title suggests, release them.

Review Title: Recognizing Spiritual Gifts (review of Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today by James Goll)

The book, Releasing Spiritual Gifts Today, by James Goll, gives hope for recognizing numerous spiritual blessings available to believers. Often, as God's word says, we don't have because we don't ask. Many don't ask because they are unaware of what is available. Read this book to boost your knowledge of the possibilities existing for faithful disciples. I appreciate that the author makes clear that all spiritual gifts are available to all believers, not just to an exclusive group. But he also explains that people can be exceptionally gifted according to God's need in particular areas, in other words, there are specialty giftings.
Practice with gifts and growth in faith with practice will help generate fruitfulness in the lives of believing disciples. Usually God impresses on a believer that they need to do something unusual, something other people might consider to be weird, that will test the believers willingness to be obedient. It is that stepping forward in faith that releases supernatural God based miracles.
I enjoyed the progression through the spiritual gifts in the book starting with the revelatory gifts, moving on to the power gifts, and ending with the vocal gifts. This organization of the gifts into three major categories provides a good foundation for understanding.
This book will be good for those who want greater knowledge of spiritual gifts than one might receive in a more general way from a sermon. Most Christians will find useful application of information presented in this book.

To understand spiritual gifts we must understand that they are not something you use when you are bored. They are to be used in our daily walk. God gives us these gifts to help others, and to work together as a body of Christ.I like how the author explains that we need to being seeking what gifts He has for us. It is important that the body of Christ use these gifts to operate together .
This is a very in depth study of the Gifts of The Holy Spirit and he does a great job of explaining them in layman's terms. He tells us to take risks and not just sit in a pew waiting for the perfect time to use your gifts. Do we sometimes worry what others might say if we start operating in our gifts? God doesn't want us to be fearful, He wants us to go out and spread His word. The book is a great tool to use for those who are just starting to operate in their gifts. It can also be used for those who are looking for more meaning and a richer understanding of The Holy Spirit. I liked how he broke the book down into sections and guided us through what each gift means and how to operate in them. Not all of us will have received the same gifts like teaching or discernment , but they are to be used together as one body. He raised a great question later in the book that I thought was so much needed an answer. There is not one gift more important than another one. "But the best gift is always going to be the one that is needed at the moment."

What a powerful book. I don’t say this about many non-fiction books but this is one I couldn’t put down. As I read I literally felt a fire in my gut burning with wanting more of the Holy Spirit.
James discuss gifts that he believes are for everyone (and I personally agree) but I know this can cause controversy within the church. I don’t attend a church that preaches this but I personally have come to believe many of the truths in this book.
Why should we desire the gifts of the Spirit? On page 29 James tells us the overall purpose:
“What is comes down to is that spiritual gifts are more about how much God wants to love other people through you than how much He loves you (even though He does, indeed, love you!). You are a channel of His grace. The gifts have been given to you so you can channel His love to someone else. Gifts are for giving away!”
Good stuff right there.
If you desire more of the gifts of the Holy Spirit I encourage you to read this book and earnestly seek these gifts so you can love others more.

James discuss gifts that he believes are for everyone (and I personally agree) but I know this can cause controversy within the church. I don’t attend a church that preaches this but I personally have come to believe many of the truths in this book.
Why should we desire the gifts of the Spirit? On page 29 James tells us the overall purpose:
“What is comes down to is that spiritual gifts are more about how much God wants to love other people through you than how much He loves you (even though He does, indeed, love you!). You are a channel of His grace. The gifts have been given to you so you can channel His love to someone else. Gifts are for giving away!”
Good stuff right there.
If you desire more of the gifts of the Holy Spirit I encourage you to read this book and earnestly seek these gifts so you can love others more.

Reading this book I had no idea what Spiritual Gifts were and became fully engaged. I couldn't put it down. I remember the first time God spoke to me when I gave myself to him. I was nine years old in a small church in Kentucky. I was thinking back on this while reading.
I feel that God gives us all a Spiritual Gift we just have to listen to his calling. On page 34 in the book he lists 25 Spiritual Gifts. I see that as a nurse God has given me many ways to share his word and gifts he has given me.
I love how this book is layed out for the lay person to the advanced. Each chapter walks you through different aspects to understand and receive your gifts. This is a wonderful tool to have especially times when you may doubt your self or your gifts. Never loose faith because God never looses faith in us. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to strengthen their relationship to God and start to understand the gifts he has given.

Releasing Spiritual Gifts was a book I really wanted to read. The title intrigued me and the book was very interesting. I enjoyed reading about and discovering the different spiritual gifts that God gives to believers, His children. This was a book that I read slowly to savor, and is one I will keep in my library to refer to often and reread to make sure I grasp all God wants me to learn. This is a book that while wonderful the first time around, is one that could be read many times and I would get something new each time. I’m glad I’ve added this book to my personal library.
