I received this book free in an exchange for an honest review, thanks to YA Bound Book Tours
Calista and Elliot are twins, they are eldest in Sunshine Shelter. They help to run this place with Miranda, those children who to live here during the war.
The first chapter is very confusing, I think its a prologue but I can't be too sure as the setting doesn't really make sense, it seems like they are telling the backdrop of the story but even then I don't really know why she is in prison. The story is incomplete. I did like the pace of the story I thought it was in between, not too fast or slow. The book was a quick read with only a few chapters so it is leaving me on so much suspense to know what is going to happen next. I know Calista is the Blade Bearer but now what? Since she finds it difficult to harness the blade and its power, she does not have very good control and is consciously transported to some other place whereas in reality she is like a monster. A tool really for Lord Jonas to control the world.
I wanted to rate this more than 3, but I am not sure how I feel with the love interests. I mean I like Mae and Ori but I feel like Mae is too emotional and Ori is immature yet they want to pursue relationships with the twins. I was hoping for more sparks and maturity. I am hoping they don't end with those two or with no one at all. Again, I don't really understand since at the start there is some "savior' who she loved once upon a time. At the moment it is too early tell but I am hoping it gets better, there are so many questions unanswered. Overall, a great quick read.
P.S. The cover is absolutely amazing, I LOVE IT who ever designed it!
An exciting, fast paced middle grade novel, Calista kept me captivated from beginning to end! The dialogue was very descriptive, the action palpable, and the storyline was very exciting. While slightly predictable for the first little bit of the book, it ended up being able to throw a few twists in there at the end that kept me completely intrigued throughout the whole book. I would definitely recommend this book to any person who likes adventure and intrigue- no matter their age!
I enjoyed the book, however I would have liked if the characters thoughts would have been more defined in the book. A few times I had to re-read what I was reading, making sure I understood what was being said.
