"This work forms an excellent summary as well as introduction to classic Anglicanism. The book covers the key points of reformed catholicism, which for Dr. Toon constituted the core of orthodoxy. Central to an understanding of Father Toon's concept is the notion that to be a true practitioner of the Anglican Way one must be both evengelical and catholic." (from customer review)
Dated and disappointing. It was originally published in 1983 as a defense of Anglicanism and the Episcopal Church in the US.
He describes the “Anglican Way” as evangelical and Catholic. His exposition of the Christian “evangel” is quite good - by grace alone through faith alone. Evangelical Protestants will be pleased. No disappointment here. Part 2 (catholicity), on the other hand, is far less convincing.
Toon’s exposition and defense of catholicity, especially his treatment of the historic episcopacy, lack scriptural backing and is filled with unproven assumptions. Though I’m not an Anglican, I am sympathetic to Anglicanism, especially Anglican evangelicalism. And I expected an Evangelical churchman of Toon’s caliber to make a much better biblical case for his position. Those interested in a more explicitly biblical discussion should consult the works of Ryle, Lightfoot, and Packer.
