Philip Bibel was born 1909 in Shebreshin (Szczebrzeszyn, a Jewish shtetl in Poland. In "Tales of the Shetetl" he recreates the vibrant life and culture of a society that, tragically exists now only in memory. Bibel is also the author of "Shafts of Light" and "Embers and Fireflies."

This book was amazing, not because of the writing, which could have been much better, but because of the incredibly clear picture it painted of life in a shtetl. I have always wondered about what it was like to live as a Jew in eastern Europe, but there was no one left to ask. This book completely dispelled all of my own imaginings.
