Irene Dische is an American writer, born and raised in the Washington Heights district of New York City.
She has studied Literature and Anthropology on the Harvard University. She was a freelance journalist (The New Yorker, The Nation). In the early 1980s, Dische moved to Berlin, Germany, and now she devides her time between Berlin and Rhinebeck, New York. A lot of her work is written in English, but often first published in German.

Un libro lieve, che riesce a parlare di drammi -dei drammi della seconda guerra mondiale, con persecuzione degli ebrei compresa- lasciando lo spazio maggiore alla vita, anche nel raccontare la morte.

Dietro un apparente libro per bambini c'è in realtà un racconto molto bello che offre uno spunto di riflessione agli adulti. La storia di questo padre molto particolare che, vedovo, decide di crescere il figlio senza paure inutili e futili, si scontra con la protezione che è costretto ad adoperare nei confronti dei figlio quanto scoppia la seconda Guerra Mondiale e lui stesso è esposto in prima persona.

Etichettato come libro per bambini, questo libro racchiude molto di più. Mi era stato regalato in occasione della Cresima chissà quanti anni fa ed è stato un piacere rileggerlo.
