These motivational readers allow you to double your instructional time by teaching children important character-building values while promoting practice with their reading skills. The books complement a CD or cassette that includes a narrative reading of each book as well as the lyrics presented as a song. Invite students to listen to the catchy tunes as they follow along in their books. Soon, your students will be singing their way toward building a more caring classroom community.
During Regina G. Burch’s 30-year career as a Kindergarten and first grade teacher, she was twice awarded Teacher of the Year and received recognition for writing numerous educational grants. She discovered a need for materials to teach character in her classroom so she authored Character Education Readers, 12 children’s books and an accompanying music CD that reinforces character traits. Mrs. Burch wrote the Character Education Resource Guide to provide teachers with more strategies to teach character. She interviewed colleagues of The Beatles as well as Paul and Linda McCartney and authored Love Is All You Need, a historical novel about The Beatles. Her latest published book, Good Manners For Kids of All Ages with accompanying music CD, helps children learn good manners and is available at www.teachingwithbooks.com. She offers parenting tips at www.reginaburch.com.
Mrs. Burch graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. I liked this book overall. It is a short story about learning to have self-control. You could use this book as a way to build good moral character within a classroom or even your own children. This will for sure spark meaningful discussion. I do think that it was a bit basic. you would have to have some follow up books that will give children a better understand of what making the right choice looks like and feels. It is also a song that I'm sure younger ones would love to sing a long too.
This is awful. We got it in a grouping of books without the accompanying “tape” so I have no idea what the melody of this terrible song is. “Everyday you need self-control. Having self-control will help you meet your goals, oh, oh, oh”? No, no, no.
