John Nettles - BBC Television's Sergeant Bergerac - is seen by many as a symbol of Jersey and has grown to love the island and its inhabitants. In this book he delves into its past to reveal stories of heroism and cruelty, murder, mystery and romance that form part of the patchwork of Jersey's colourful history. The book's topics include personalities such as Lily Langtry and Sir George Carteret, the German occupation and the unsolved mystery of the Newalls' murder, and the text is supported by colour photographs of the island's historic landscape.
John Vivian Drummond Nettles, OBE, is a British actor and author. He is best known for his starring roles as detectives in the crime drama television series ''Bergerac'' (1981–1991) (as title character Jim Bergerac) and ''Midsomer Murders'' (1997–2011) (as Tom Barnaby). "John Nettles' Jersey" is a tribute to the island's people and its history by an actor who worked and lived there for 10 or more years. John Nettles is an actor who played the title role in the TV series "Bergerac" which was filmed on the island.
The island of Jersey is one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. I had never heard of these islands prior to "Bergerac." I've enjoyed researching the islands in general, Jersey in particular, learning more about their history. Nettles' love of the people and his interest in the history of the island spurred him to write this book. The story begins in 1066. The times the stories of these times and the participants in the history of the island are told in a very readable way, perfect for all historians. My interest is mainly World War II history, and Nettles spends a good bit of time describing what happened to the island and its residents; many of the German-built embankments are still present and appear from time to time in the TV series. He's particularly sensitive to the plight of the young and old during the time of occupation.
Fans of John Nettles of "Bergerac" and "Midsomer Murders" fame as well as Anglophiles and historians will enjoy this book. Nettles does not insert himself into the story but shares his research as well as his chats with residents about their experiences during German occupation. His love of the people is especially poignant with the list of those who lived during these times and what happened to them: loss of limbs loss of relatives, deaths - a kind of memorial to those who experienced the worst experiences.
"John Nettles' Jersey" is a real testament to the history and character of the island and its residents.
I really like John Nettles' style of writing. He is a very good author as well as an English actor. This book continues his writing on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands off the coast of Great Britain. If you like history, you would enjoy this book. The author talks about Lillie Langtry, the Occupation by Germany during World War II, and the most famous murder on the island of Jersey among other things. While the book is limited in appeal to an audience, why don't you try it and learn something about Jersey, a really fascinating place!
