Four Play

Rafe and Pete have hit a rut. After seven and a half blissfully happy years, their lack of sexual experience is driving them apart.

When they proposition mutual friend Michael to help out with their problems - knowing full well Michael has his own partner Andrew – what seems like a simple solution quickly spirals out of control.

I liked how there's definitely a lot of honesty in the feelings that are discussed in this play. The scene where Andy talks about their insecurities in dating a conventionally attractive guy like Michael really hit close to home for me, as did maybe that character in general. Maybe I'm a bitchy gay like them (I'm gay too so I can say it) and that's okay. I'm not a huge fan of the conclusion being a variation on "open relationships as a concept are, indeed, bad!", but I guess that's what the author feels is true in this case and for these characters. That's definitely a very mid-twenties thought for gay men to have. Personally I think it would've made more sense for their self-worth to not end up so tied to sex and their romantic relationships, but oh well. I guess that would require them to fight over a copy of The Velvet Rage, rather than A Little Life.

really loved this play, i am so glad i found it in a book-sale. it is so simplistic in it’s structure but holds so much tension and heartbreak. a play to study if you are trying to learn how to build a great play. i would really like to explore more of this playwright’s work. 🏳️‍🌈
