Stolen into the mountains and forced to do her father’s bidding, Ruby finds herself drawn ever deeper into the dangerous world of the Phoenix. Now implicated in Lynk’s terrible crimes, she faces a merciless punishment if she returns home. However, trapped within Lynk’s clutches she faces isolation, manipulation and torture. All alone, she is haunted by a prophecy that will inevitably decide her fate.
As her escape attempts fail, she has no choice but to wait, praying for rescue from her friends. Will they come to save her? Will she ever be free of the dark secrets that threaten her life? Will she ever see Kieran, her hopelessly forbidden love, again?
This second instalment of the Firebird Trilogy is no less gripping than the first.
The characters and place are well developed and deepen as we get to know them better.
Whilst I appreciate the ending is written to leave us wanting more - namely to wait for the third book in the trilogy - it felt less like an ending of a book and more like an ending of a chapter. It felt unfinished, leaving us on such a cliff hanger as to feel unfair!
I can honestly say i'm not even sure what to say! I have no words , not enough to describe the perfection of this series. I knew , when i started this book that i would love it , i had already fallen in love with Ruby and her friends in Ashes , i was also horrified at THAT cliffhanger in Ashes , so for some strange reason i was thinking that Risen would be a bit less of a cliffhanger ..... wrong. ( i'm actually traumatized by the cliffhanger in this , my poor husband has had to endure 15 minutes of me going "what???? the actual f**k???? she can't leave it like that!!!" ..... and i still feel that way .... Harbon!!! Sort me out some therapy yes??? ) Ruby is still as stubborn and willful as in the first book ( which i like , consistency people! just because you have feelings for a guy doesn't mean you have to become a bloody pansy! ) And once again , she appears to have gotten herself in a spot of bother. Or rather , many many spots of bother since the girl is a bloody magnet for bother! Kieran is just as pigheaded and frustrating! And a cocky son of a bitch! But i think we all need a bit of a Kieran in our lives , someone who can brighten it no matter the situation. The world building is just as good as in Ashes , you get a real feel for the surrounding , the people , the atmosphere , its pretty amazing. So we start off where Ashes left us , poor Ruby is kidnapped in some dark manky cave in only god knows where. and she's not even sure if anyone can find her. Evidently someone does find her after a while ( but not before some trouble has been caused and some damage done to other people , herself and her character ), and then it's all systems are go. Escapes , chases , arrests , near death experiences , soul searching , stolen kisses ( and not from who you think! ) , plot twist , plot twist and then THAT bloody plot twist which had me going "whaaaaaaatttttt?????". Honestly, I could sit and gush about this book all day long , but i don't want to give away any spoilers. But i highly recommend this series to everyone! Harbon ..... please don't make me wait long for book 3 , i may cry , and i look fugly as sin when i cry ... don't make me scare my kids.
Great book! Book one was great so I read this one. Just I kinda got tired of her getting beat up or injured. She could have turned into a bird a start slashing more often. The girl was kinda slow to figure things out and that daddy of hers has got to go!
