One Little Word: A Mary Fisher Novel

Rate this book
1896:
Upon leaving the town of Loggerhead behind them, Mary and Abigail continue on their journey home to Greenhaven only to be delayed when they allow themselves to be led by a lost child into the Florida wilderness where a hidden church, which only allows guests entry by special invitation, claims to be home to a ministering angel. At first, Mary wants to press forward with their travel plans, only when she discovers that an acquaintance is donating huge sums of money just for the chance of bearing witness to a divine miracle, she decides to pay up and remain to observe so as to draw her own conclusions. After observing a case of supernatural healing, Mary comes to discover that the angel’s keeper is far from the heaven-born saint that he claims to be, and when the man attempts to unleash his own brand of hell on earth, Mary finds herself faced with an evil that can only be felled by One Little Word...
Tortured by her own conscience when temptation calls, driven by her own lust for vengeance when a friend is murdered, and led of an elusive, ethereal spirit to right the wrongs perpetrated against the innocent, Mary must follow her own heart in order to navigate through the dark waters that threaten to inundate the hidden village of Bela, where traditional values have been twisted into something horrific that only she has the force of will to untangle. With the help of Abigail and her friends, Mary cautiously advances through a series of shifting alliances during which she will discover who she can afford to trust, and who she must be willing to kill.

Mary and Abigail are two lovers traveling through Florida, and it seems as if trouble is waiting for them around every corner.

“One Little Word” is the sequel to Peters’s award-winning novel “Loggerhead.” It picks up exactly where the action left off, and we find Mary and Abigail in the back of a pig-filled cart, traveling towards the boat that will take them home to Greenhaven.

But of course things don’t go as planned. The location of a lost child leads the couple on a journey into the shrouded, mysterious town of Bela, where absolutely nothing is as it seems – and where practically everything will go wrong.

Get ready for a non-stop rollercoaster of twists and turns. The action is as rollicking and aggressive as Mary’s deadly left hand, and just when you think you’ve gotten to the most exciting part – you haven’t. And yet, even the fast-paced action sequences are written beautifully. It’s as if two books by Sarah Waters and Clive Cussler got together and had a baby. The title of the book is a reference to an old hymn, which claims that the Prince of Darkness will be felled by one little word. The same is true in this case – but you’re never going to guess the way the devil goes down.

Throughout all the fighting, running and shooting, though, one thing holds the narrative in place like an anchor in troubled waters. This thing, of course, is the love shared by strange-looking, mannish Mary and the stunningly beautiful Abigail. Fans of “Loggerhead” grew to love the honest romance of these two heroines, and readers of “One Little Word” will not be disappointed.

Now all that’s left is to wait for the next book. Mary and Abigail’s adventures will resume in “Yet the Sea Is Not Full.” (But never fear! If you’re craving another dose of Mary and Abigail, you can read about their earlier adventures in Peters’s “Green Flourish Pentalogy.”)

T.A. Peters is a gifted writer who has a wonderful imagination. His main character, Mary Fisher confronts one challenge after another. She must self examine her own morality when she is attracted to other women despite her love for Abigail. In this book the two ladies walk into a cult filled with the evil of abusing and killing children; castrating young boys; and setting up girls with men of all ages.
I am anxious to read the next book by Mr. Peters.

One Little Word is the follow up novel to Loggerhead and continues on in the brilliant writing style from T.A. Peters without faltering. After Mary Fischer and Abigail leave Loggerhead, they find a little girl on the way and try to find out where she comes from. They come across a strange church where the goings-on are questionable, from the appearance to an angel to the strange behavior of the young people involved. Mary realizes something is amiss and slowly unravels a nasty cult headed by an unsavory minister.
I love the style and the flow of T.A. Peter’s writing. The re-creation of historical Florida as seen through the eyes of a young Scotsman (woman) is well done and a joy to read. Highly recommended.
